Artificial sweeteners linked to obesity epidemic, scientists say

http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/artifi...-say-1.2769196

"Artificial sweeteners may exacerbate, rather than prevent, metabolic disorders such as Type 2 diabetes, a study suggests.

Calorie-free artificial sweeteners are often chosen by dieters in part because they are thought not to raise blood sugar levels.

In Wednesday?s issue of the journal Nature, researchers report that artificial sweeteners increase the blood sugar levels in both mice and humans by interfering with microbes in the gut. Increased blood sugar levels are an early indicator of Type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease.

The increase in consumption of artificial sweeteners coincides with the obesity and diabetes epidemics, Eran Segal of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and his co-authors said.

"Our findings suggest that non-caloric artificial sweeteners may have directly contributed to enhancing the exact epidemic that they themselves were intended to fight."

every single one of those studies should be thrown out because they don't isolate the product specifically.

typically, people who load up on sweeteners eat a lot more sugars from other sources ie breads/rice/corn based products which is the source of the problem.

"Mice whose drinking water was supplemented with artificial sweetener developed glucose intolerance compared with mice drinking water alone, or water with just sugar in it. The effect occurred both in mice fed normal chow and those on a high-fat diet."

The statistics are not cause and effect revelations: People who use artificial sweeteners are avoiding sugars so they will lose weight or are already obese trying to control further weight gain.

Sort of a "Captain Obvious" observation ...

So is sugar. Actually sugar is a lot worse lol

Plus also have you noticed how salad really fattens people up? No. Just check the salad bar at the next corporate conference you go to - notice how all the fat people are standing there ;)

Actually this isn't true in my case and I have had a nasty go around with nurtasweet - I used it for a very long time way before I found out I have Diabetes and I stayed pretty sick all the time - I didn't eat much of any of the other typical things one would think of - there was ONE girl in the Dr's Office that asked me if I used Nutrasweet and I did - in my coffee, tea and soft drinks - turns out I have a pretty nasty allergy to that and it makes me sick as a dog if I get too much of it.

I was diagnosed with Type II in May of 2007 - now in my case, I was predisposed and had been borderline since I was 16 - so none of these tests may even amount to nothing in my particular case - but having said all of that -

I am probably one of the very few diabetics that doesn't have a constant battle with sweets - because I just never developed that particular thing - I guess because I was raised knowing it was lurking just at the surface so I'd always go the polar opposite direction and the shit STILL got me!

I can do Splenda - but Nutrisweet flat can fuck you up!

It could be interesting to see a similar study but with Stevia instead.

Yes because people don't generally assimilate things like breads, rice and corn as 'sweets'. Eat tonnes of it and develop type 2 diabetes. It had ZERO to do with sweeteners because those don't trigger insulin response. If you want to test it out talk to someone with type 1 diabetes and ask them if they've ever had a diet coke, if the answer is yes then it would have killed them or given them a seriously adverse effect. This is not the case and is easily disproven.

The issue is sweeteners are treated like the boogeyman and have been because of one random study with a mouse that developed a tumour about 30 or so years ago. Despite the fact that they have NEVER recreated that same result and despite them trying endlessly to they still can't prove association. Even with the one random test media outlets and blowhards around the world took it as fact and have been making it the 'evil' that is making everyone fat and unhealthy and even causing cancer... when the truth is everyone is just making an excuse to keep eating sugars, whether it is cake, doughnuts, sub sandwiches, pasta, potatoes or corn in excess instead.

For the record I eat all of those in moderation when i'm not training heavy, but I know EXACTLY what will happen to me if i make a habit of it. Nobody is saying that drinking/eating high amounts of sweeteners is a good option either, but if you drink it in moderation there is no side effect.

oh for the record.. http://www.elitefitness.com/articledata/glycemic.html
