The troops were already there, stationed in Sevastopol by the terms of the lease agreement over the Black Sea fleet base. The Russian navy is allowed up to 25,000 troops on Crimean territory.

Russia stole Crimea after threatening with army invasion, there is NO other side of that story. This is how it went down - Putin threatened with army invasion, he stole the territory from another country, you can try and spin it all the way you want, this is the only truth.

This is what exactly happened. Putin gave them everything they wanted (in fact they got a full autonomy). So the most powerful Chechen clans (e.g. Kadyrov's one) that were fighting against federal government, sworn to Putin. Now they are the most loyal citizens of Russia.
