I must admit, with all the grief the liberals on this board . . .

GFY liberals sure like to hand out the hate to Walmart, so I was really surprised to read this article. I thought they only used indentured servants.

So because they plan to do something in the future, they're no longer a shit company to work for?

Report: Walmart Workers Cost Taxpayers $6.2 Billion In Public Assistance - Forbes

And when they say they pay more than minimum wage, they do. Around here about .15 more per hour.

I read the article. So, how much better than $7.25? $7.45?

Think it's mostly symbolic.

The more important issue is if the jobs pay enough to make 80% to 90% of their workers not qualify for food stamps. What percentage of their workforce actually qualify for some form of governmental assistance? I have never seen that number audited out -- it should be -- just to set the record straight.

Yeah, you read real good - Wal-Mart says its average full-time hourly wage is $12.92, compared with the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

I read that PDF too ...

There needs to be a real audit: USDA, Wage Labor Board and the IRS should subpoena Walmart's labor records. They have to be retained by law for some set period.

There is to much taxpayer money involved. Same for other large scale retail employers.

Show me the audit! -- what Walmart says means squat.

Walmart should be an employment opportunity for teenagers. Any adult working there as the primary source of his income is a colossal loser who has made nothing but terrible life choices so I have no pity for him.

I don't think that's entirely fair to say. If people get laid off from respectable jobs and need to make ends meet in the meantime until they find something comparable would you call such a person a loser? Compared to what? Going on welfare for years until they get hired again? I'm sure that this isn't often the case but still a possibility.

Walmart has a net profit of like 4% if I remember correctly MOST large corporations the net hovers around the number... so look at the reality of the situation: Walmart subsidized the unskilled that would be draining 100% from the gov instead the 6.9 bill how much would it be? 100 billion?

I should want my subsidy too then for working and not being a leach by that logic.

Just send me a bill for my Walmart tax -- the check will be in the mail :P

If $10 million is spent on auditing a business whose employees are getting over on the government for $6.9 Billion it's well worth the expense. Put an end to the speculation one way or another.

Maybe, I am just jealous -- I don't have the opportunity of lowering my payroll costs by off the books government benefits payments.

How much is the average wage for those that actually work in a store? Also who can survive on $13 an hour? I made that in my summer job 20 years ago.

You do realize how averages work, correct?

Seems you might need a read up on that, as well as what a shit company Walmart is.

Why do you say we hate Walmart? Sure their pay is dirt-low, but then again so are their prices, and since they are literally everywhere, they employ a bazillion people. I personally don't like to shop there much but they do have some stuff that I need sometimes and their prices are hard to beat.

You could say that Walmart is evil because they kill small business, but that is only part of a much bigger problem.

I used to think Wal Mart was pure evil.

When they made plans to move into our town I was pissed. They opened up one of those little "neighborhood groceries" store - Just food. It replaced the "Rainbow Market" that had been here for forty years. I was one of the ones who complained loudly about it.

In the end... The new Wal Mart employs three times as much people, everything is cheaper, and keeps our tax dollars in the community. We never visited the old "Rainbow Market" - it was old, dirty, dingy, had poor lighting, and the employees there either looked like zombies or potential axe murderers. It was really a crappy place. Wal Mart refurbished the building, and now the parking lot is full. My wife shops there instead of driving over to the Wal Mart in the next town.

Much to my surprise it was a huge win for our community.

I remember flipping burgers for $3/hour. I worked four jobs, worked seven days a week, and rarely had any free time. At the same time I had two room mates to help pay the rent.

That's what you do when you are at the bottom of the pay scale - it gives you motivation to try hard, do better, and move ahead with your life.

reality check ... people that work pay for people that don't work... I'm paying 51% income tax, my health care cost have gone through the roof with obama care... just the way it is... if I can have walmart cover some of the expense I'm happy as fuck. with out walmart I would be paying 90%+ tax

That can't possibly be true; sorry Rochard. GFY says they are a burden on society . . . maybe they are just a burden on their employees and no one else.

Those that think the problem with averages seem to forget . . .

WAL MART's CEO says that... He is full of shit... go ask 100 walmart employees what they are making... if ANY hourly worker says they are making over 12 an hour I would be shocked...

You must be thinking of another cam site ... Walmartization here we come ...

In all seriousness, a lot of the lower paid service jobs that cannot be outsourced are being subsidised by indirect government benefits. All businesses utilize accelerated and straight line depreciation on property on equal terms. If there is a government low paid wage subsidy it should be above boards and accounted for.

What percentage is acceptable to be working for and earning wages below the poverty level in this country? No one likes working 20 hours for $150 less the minimum payroll deductions unless they are going to school or retired.

Let's not forget Wal-Mart taking out 'dead peasant' insurance on their employees in the early 90s - making themselves the beneficiaries.
