The only time I ever download anything via torrent is when it's not available for purchase anywhere or I don't have access.
For instance, There are some great british television shows and UK documentaries that only air on TV in the UK and I have zero way to access it. Is it wrong? Maybe. But I figure if it's a TV show or TV documentary airing in the uk that will never hit DVD then I am an unknown quantity in the first place and represent zero percent of their lost market.
