Rant The Measles -- Shit's Gettin' Real Yo!

After doing a quick bit of research into this whole measles fiasco, it turns out that approximately 1 in 500,000 Americans have caught the measles this past year, during the current "major outbreak!"

Now I know those numbers sound terrifying, I mean FUCK! That's 2 people in every 1 million that get it (like 20 people in every 10 million)! Those odds are insanely-insane, that you won't catch it next! But it gets even crazier! How much crazier you may be asking yourself?

Well, not just this past year, but let's look at the past 10 years, as this measles outbreak has reached ridiculous levels in the United States!!! ...

In the past 10 years in the United States alone, 1,500 American's have contracted the measles (that's an average of 1 in every 2 million people catching it yearly!!!) -- with an unbelievable ZERO deaths recorded, all of which were related to catching this horrifyingly deadly disease!! ZERO deaths! That means NONE of them could have been you, or no American friend you have, since these are US stats!

However, in all seriousness... ONLY 106 people have died as a result of getting the measles vaccine the past 10 years! But we'll just sweep those numbers under the rug, cause "hey, those numbers mean shit" That's just prevention bullshit, it has nothing to do with actually catching it the real way!

Compared to years ago (many years ago), when the measles was taking people down by the 1000's, this isn't a disease that takes people out that have the luxuries of things like electricity, running water, aaahhh soap. So unless you live in a 3rd world country, the measles in 2015 is nothing more than a cold with a rash (or the same as any rough Saturday, after a wild Friday night downtown).

So based on stats go get vaccinated, especially if you're in the US, times are tough and the government and hospitals need your money..so show your support and give your life (I'm sure they have a fucking shelf, with a ton of medals on it somewhere, just for that).

BTW...What the fuck happened to Ebola? I guess that whole fear mongering bullshit just didn't really catch on like they hoped...

and hey, one more note...the fucking flu, it takes out up to 50k people in the US yearly...but let's be afraid and get vaccinated over something doesn't kill a single person in the United States anymore.

Shit gets real when immunization levels drop. Look at how fast that outbreak spread - 102 people through 14 states already. Do you have any idea how contagious measles is? Measles sickens 12-18 unvaccinated people where as the flu sickens 1-4.

And measles can be a cold to a grown, healthy adult but it can be deadly and cause long lasting complications in children. As many as one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children.

it's misleading to only look at the past 10 years. MEasles was declared eradicated in 2000. So using the past 10 years data to suggest measles is a non-issue is completely backwards. It's a non-issue DUE to vaccines.

and ebola is still around.

I went through the red and german measles at the same time as a kid. Ran a temp of 107f at the time. They put me in a tub of ice water at the hospital.

To this day I still add ice to my bourbon.

I am not sure how old you are, but perhaps the measles vaccine was not available when you were a kid? It wasn't for me, so I got sick with all my brothers.

Not as old as you for sure, vaccines were available, but my hippy parents didn't trust the system. I am one of 7 kids and we all had measles, chicken pox etc. the hard way, not a single doctor's visit, we all survived and never felt anyone's life was in danger from it.

Because of this thread I did some basic research and while your 1.1 million deaths is alarming, compare that to under 150k in 2013 and I think it's clear that this issue is being addressed.

Even if it wasn't, we have to ask who these people are that are both too ignorant to get one of the cheapest and most widely available vaccines in existence and at the same time too sickly to survive a simple disease that only 2 generations ago was practically a universal right of passage to adulthood. Do we really need that in the gene pool? What if the entire human race was that stupid and defenseless? A simple outbreak of some relatively benign virus could wipe out key elements of society in a short period.

Obviously any death is tragic, and for children moreso, but that doesn't change the fact that 100% of all living people are going to die of something, some sooner than others.

The WHO lists quite a few causes of death that are both more preventable and more deadly than measles, so I stand by my statement that there are better things to panic about right this minute and I am not in a big hurry to stress over whatever CNN thinks I need to be stressing over.
