California Bill Proposes Digital License Plates with Advertisements

If California passes a bill that turns the states license plates into digital versions of the current metal plates.

The California legislature is looking at a bill that would allow the DMV to issue digital license plates that would be able to show advertisements when stopped at a red light or stop sign for more than four seconds

Great, more distractions for the weak minded drivers of California and abroad. Another grand Idea from the democratic party!

The advertisements would need to be sent to the device, which means the device would need to have an Internet connection of some sort, meaning very easy to track anyone. ;-)

Pretty soon they'll just turn the plates into tube sites - with license content...

Showing ads doesn't really make any sense to me, but going digital does. The "plate(s)" could be built right into the car during the manufacturing process and updated during the purchase. It could pair with the drivers cellphone to indicate when the owner is driving or when it is another trusted person. It could flash bright red or CALL POLICE if the driver reports the car stolen, etc.

And if it could show ads, maybe drivers are compensated for the ads they show? Or maybe you could display your own ads or messages?

One thing I never understood is why not put ads on cars?

Think about it.... If Progressive Insurance was willing to pay me $1k a year to someone to skin their car, why not? I bet some people would jump up and down for that.

You need to get out more often. I did dinner with a police officer last night and he was telling me about computers and cameras the cops have in their cars these days. They automatically scan and read all license places and an alarm goes off if the registration is expired, they are convicted felon, or if the car is reported stolen.

You need to get out more often.

Been going on for many years. Many advertisers spend many hundreds per month so well over 1k per year. They pick applicants based on car type, geographic location matching to advertisers. So if ya drive downtown Chicago everyday easier to get accepted than if ya park on a farm in South Dakota unless an advertiser is selling Hay. Most have mileage requirements as well as they want the car moving.

I had my back window done but it was for my own mainstream site and basically just parked my car with the back window facing one of the busiest stopped traffic streets in Chicago.

I came real close the other day to crashing in to the back of someone because of a few signs at the side of the road i know it was my fault but sometimes they are so distracting.

I think you can do that already - I remember a company here in Montreal that used to pay people to put wraps and ads on cars. I don't know if they are still around though.

Yes of course cops can do that already, but the cop car's camera has to be near the car, or looking in the right area to see it.

My idea would alert anyone / everyone around them. If you're at a stop light and you see a "Call Police" message on a car (just like they have on some busses now) wouldn't you do it? I would.

Like mobile ad beacons that are used in retail stores, license plate beacons could display ads for local businesses when a vehicle drives into their " advertising zone."

The 4 square blocks nearest the KFC restaurant location for example. Google gets the contract to sell the ads and the state gets their percentage.

the article is from 2009, there's a reason this hasn't happened and it's because it's silly.

Advertising your small local business is not the same.

I am talking about large companies that spend hundreds of millions of advertising on TV - Dell and Firestone. I was in Sacramento yesterday and I didn't see one ad on a car.

Big companies have been doing this for many years. I do still see them on cars in Chicago but not as hot today as it was years ago so fading out. There were a few legit companies and a handful of scam companies as well.

I do make sales from the thousands of daily stopped cars looking at my advertisement but not to the degree I thought it would generate so maybe others weren't seeing enough sales as well. All of my sales are in the xxx range though and since it was a one time cost to make the ad and my prime parking spot is free even if the conversion isn't as high as I hoped it doesn't cost me anything to continue to position my back window facing downtown stopped Chicago traffic so the ad I made has paid for itself many times over so now free advertising/sales continue to roll in. If you have a prime major city parking spot worth the cost to make your own ad as think I paid $150 for 2 signs. If you have to pay someone hundreds a month to run your ad might not see the return you were hoping for.

They already skin all the city buses, I think advertising cancelling sun glasses will be big!
