Best City To Live In New Zealand

I've heard Auckland has a lot of maori gangs and stuff. Have you travelled around NZ..... what offers the best all around safety, quality of life, facilities, schooling, cost of living, and so on? If you had to pick a city in NZ to buy a property and live there which one would you choose from the above?

I have lived in Dunedin, Christchurch and Hamilton - Christchurch gets my vote, but I haven't seen it after the quake...

Hamilton is nice - It's warmer and has an older feel about it - How old are you?....

Dunedin is cool if you are younger and it has a more 'alternative' vibe - Lots of students - Bloody cold in the winter...

I really didn't enjoy Wellington when I visited - Not sure why - Just blah.....

Auckland is warmer and is obviously a good sized city with all the usual facilities - I stayed a few weeks in Grey Lynne - Nice area...

I wont comment on prices - They have changed a lot since I was there.....

Only one place, queenstown.

I spend 5 months a year there. Expensive on USD but gorgeous.

I agree - It's fantastic - Would you raise a family there though? As he asking about schooling he seems to have that in mind...

Also RummyBoy have a look at Napier - Mediterranean climate, great wine - Well worth a look.....

Never been to New Zeland and googled for the Queenstown images. It looks almost as cool as Baikal and Kamchatka.

Siberia looks amazing - Shame about the 3 day summers...

Also looking at the photos of Kamchatka do they see anything up there without shooting it?....

It depends. In continental Russia you may have -40 winters as well as +40 summers. As about Baikal, it looks fantastic during winter.

It looks like at least 99% of Russia is on the continent... So what is non continental Russia?
I asked that before, but forgot to look for an answer.

Jesus christ, why?

That place looks spectacular but the experience is well... not so great

Why on earth are you there every year for 5 months? The snow sure as shit is 100% not worth it? Maybe to just flat out party(I can understand that bit), but surely not for the snow? Not year in year out?

Nelson at the top of the south island would be my pick. I'm born in NZ ( Queenstown ).. However if I was to return to NZ then that would be my choice for many many reasons. Vibrant arts community, lots of seasonal work, great restaurants, LOTS of wineries, nice beaches, safe kids environment, good schools, low cost of living.

I have been all around NZ. Might be a strange answer, but I really liked staying in New Plymouth. Lake taupo was amazing too. To live for an extended time I'd probably live in Auckland though as I like bigger city living.

Its similar but being western country toilets flush and you can use as much toilet paper as you wish in hotels, and its all that 3 ply stuff!. Also all accommodation from back packers to 5 star have FREE hot running water in the rooms with bedding and towels changed daily.

.. Its the small things like that Russia forgets.

I didn't get it. What exactly you were wanted to say there? I don't know about your shithole, but winters in Siberia are really cold and hot water is the essential part of the central heating system. Stop it for a few hours and a whole manifold will be destroyed from inside by frozen water. Very sad there are so many uneducated imbeciles like you.

I don't know about your shit hole either, but I can say the OP of this thread has chosen my shit hole over yours, and for very good reasons.. so suck it up he wants too go to New Zealand and not Russia.

Just because I'm uneducated, does not make me an imbecile. Understand educated talent can be brought or hired as needed, being an imbecile would be someone like yourself hanging out in the very place you wish to do business and acting more like a mother land tourist rep. See I already made enough from this game to last several lifetimes, your just part of my entertainment these days.

Depends on your priorities. Auckland if you want all the amenities you can get from a large city. Queenstown if you like the night life and adventure sports. Neither of those if you want reasonably priced real estate. Having considered moving back to NZ myself I would choose Whangarei or Nelson. Both of these for the climate, real estate prices and close proximity to beautiful coastal areas.

Now hang on a minute.... no-one's shithole gets priority over anyone elses!

Infact, I am interested to visit NZ and consider it for a future living option but Russia is also a beautiful place and just about as soon as I get a chance, I'm planning to make a trip to Russia. One thing I really like about Russia (as much as with China) more than any other country is the political independence but also to increase my knowledge about important economies and BRIC countries.

Thanks Charlie... I definitely would consider Melbourne but for the fact that it has become prohibitively expensive for property. As for sheep, well the fact there is more sheep than people is enticing because its evidence of the fact that New Zealand is highly self sufficient from a food point of view. Now maybe I am wrong, but I just a take guess considering how much of my supermarket food is sourced there.

Well rummy, I can buy beautiful property very close to where I live for less than $2.00/m, but it doesnt mean it's worthy for living. Not that Melbourne is a mecca of civilization, it's just that NZ is a beautiful place filled with hicks. NZ is the equivalent of 1960's US green acres. If you can hack it more power to you.

Expensive property is not really critical to me (yeah, after living in Moscow nothing can be expensive to you ;)). I just don't want to live in a place where every single creature is gonna kill you (spiders, crocodiles, snakes, jellyfishes, platypus and even magpies). Sorry, but I pass

The Mohave valley with its snakes and scorpions was enough to me and I don't consider visiting Australia

Same same , I could never live in Moscow because of the bears and wolves.

And btw Kiwis are more likely to be wanking off in the milk tanks they send to make Russian baby food than they are to be fucking sheep these days.

Anyways like pointed out NZ is fine and cheap and all that but its in green acre days much of it. Keep to areas where there's a consistent flow of tourist's and your ok, and for the South Island.. Nelson is best IMHO. Queenstown/ Wanaka are over priced, over hyped and only a consideration is your directly involved in the tourism industry. Cities are cities and if you want to live in one.. then skip NZ.

Don't get me wrong...... If Melbourne was affordable enough for me to buy a decent 4BR property there without it being something I needed to live in (ie a holiday home) for maybe $400k USD in a top area then I would consider it.

So many people have told me good things about Melbourne and I know it has a kind of quasi European vibe about it from what I have seen/read/heard. Good weather too.

However, if I take that $400k and buy something in Adelaide, I'm sure I can get a beautiful property and that would break my heart because I'd be sitting in Melbourne dreaming about the home I could have had.
