Quick Mac Question - GoFuckYourself.com

I have my mini display out to a 42inch TV set on duplicate. The imac screen displays the same pic as the TV as expected. Can I temporarily 'turn off' the imac screen so they are not both on, leaving just the big display active?

Hi Sober,

Try running your computer in Clamshell Mode. Go to https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201834 to learn how, or just google Macbook Clamshell mode.

Or another thing you can do is press Command-F2 to extend your desktop to the TV, then slide your application / browser / whatever over to that TV.

No 'Clamshell' mode on an iMac I'm afraid. Its NOT a huge deal, but when I see something I like, like a video, I can throw it up onto the big screen on the wall above the imac.

I take the brightness down to zero on the imac and sit across the room to view the big screen. it would just be nice if the imac screen was black, as is the other smaller LCD that sits along side it on the desk...

No biggy - Just wondering if it was a setting that I'm no aware of

Ugh ok I didn't realize you were on an iMac. In that case just pressing the F1 to dim it to darkness as you said is probably the only way.

I use 'Hot Corners' for this but am only using one display so I don't know how it would work with 2. Is there a setting somewhere, where the Hot Corners would only apply to one screen?

(System Preferences/Desktop and Screensaver then click on the Screensaver tab)

It doesn't work. I have 2 x iMac 27's connected together so I can use either computer as stand-alone, or either in extended desktop mode. (Works perfectly!). But when you setup a hot corner to turn off the monitor, it turns both off, I guess because its assuming you want it to sleep.

Of course it is. The monitors not built into the computer, just connected so just switch it off

ehhhmmm no.

you can choose to use built in only, external only, mirror or expand desktop

and there are Win PCs with built in monitors and also these thingies that we call laptops...

On my Macbook air the lowest brightness setting is "off" too bad it's not the same on the iMac.

I used to have my MacBook Pro hooked up to a 4K monitor through HDMI. Just close the lid. Might be a setting you need to change so it doesn't go to sleep though. Can't remember how I set it up.

Pretty much all video apps like VLC, mplayer etc can black out the unused display. It's all in the prefs of the app.
