Ontario researchers have launched the first clinical trial that will use two, custom-made, cancer-fighting viruses to stimulate the immune system into attacking and destroying tumours.

The use of viruses in cancer treatment is part of a growing field of research called immunotherapy. The idea is to use genes, antibodies and viruses to help the immune system recognize and attack cancer on its own.

But seriously, Canadian researchers don't fuck around, and they think they're definitely on to something. It's taken years for this to get to the human trial stages, but even if it ups the chances of survival of only a % of cancer patients it'll be worth it. But it could be so much more.

God damned cancer has been kicking our asses for forever. Two aunts of mine, an uncle, several friends of mine, and so many others who I just knew or knew of have died from it. My brother's wife has it but has so far beaten it. I had a CT scan a few weeks ago and 3 of the 4 people sharing the waiting room with me had cancer stories, one has a rare form of it, another's husband died from it. I am literally sick to death of hearing about this disease winning all the time.

It's long past time we got one in the win column.

I can assure you that not only Canadians doing those studies. Many countries are considering use of modified herpes to cure a skin (and not oly) cancer. Here is a similar news from my country: chrdk.ru/news/2015/7/9/borba-s-rakom-s-pomoshju-virusov (use Google translate). So it will be implemented in any case. If not in Canada, then in Britain, China or Russia... So get ready for a zombie apocalypse ;)

Correct, it's going on in several countries. Canada is just the first to try it using two different viruses working in conjunction instead of just one.

Well said sentiment - I totally agree.

We definitely need more in the win column when it comes to cancer. Likewise, I've had several friends and family members taken by this damn thing...and I'm tired of seeing it. I made light of the story above (only because it reminded me right away of the movie)...but in all seriousness I truly hope it leads to an advancement towards the eventual cure.

I was serious about being ready for the zombie apocalypse too though.


Btw that CT scan I had done was non-"C" related. Had a full physical recently and am happy to say there is no sign of cancer present. Not that I need it, I have enough health problems without it. ha ha

Common cold fights back. And cancer.. well.. it is us (our body's function gone wrong). Even with antibiotics you kill "you" every time you use those, and cancer treatment is even more complicated.

I've often wondered about that. Back in the day they seemed to cure major diseases with a bunsen burner, a few beakers and grainy microscopes...without the advantage of hundreds of millions of dollars, thousands of researchers - and advanced technology.

Granted, cancer is relatively more complex to solve and there's many facets to it.

But still...

until the invention of Penicilin (accidentally) people were dying like flies and we never lived as long as we do today. the life expectancy for a male in the US in 1900 was 46 years

In 1796, Edward Jenner, a doctor in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, rural England, discovered that immunity to smallpox could be produced by inoculating a person with material from a cowpox lesion.

Point being - the doc didn't have millions of bucks at his disposal and a worldwide team of scientists with advanced technology working on the cure.

And btw - average life span averages in 1900 was heavily skewed due to high infant mortality rates. For every 1000 births approx. 100 died.

In contrast - in 2008 the rate was only less than 7 deaths per 1000.

but what can I say - obviously things like HIV, cancer or just the common flu are not as easily beaten as other diseases

I don't disagree with you...we're most definitely doing better these days obviously. And there's been great advancements with HIV (at least beating it into submission - but not totally curing or eradicating it).

Yeah, as with everything in his world...WHP sees a conspiracy in suppression of cancer cures. I wouldn't go that far out on a limb myself with a conclusion - but at times it makes me scratch my head and gives me pause to ponder. It just seems to be taking an extraordinary amount of time (given the massive amounts of money and research resources available today) to lick this thing once and for all. It seems as if every week they point their finger at different causes - whether it's dietary, environmental, hereditary in the human genome...tomorrow - Kraft Dinner will be the culprit.

It's as if they spin the wheel while spending the money.

but cancer treatment would be a billion $ business as well, would make no sense to hide it. besides the nobel prices and the gain in reputation that come with it.

Interestingly enough, they're using one to kill the other. As I understood it a common cold engineered variant is being used in conjunction with another virus to attack cancer cells while ensuring the body's own immune system doesn't get in the way, or bolster it so it helps.

The article silentknight linked to is actually quite a good read btw. It supports the information I saw that was reported yesterday on TV news.

There are usually diminishing returns in pretty much everything. The "easy stuff" has already been invented. When enough good hygiene was a break through in the past, it is not as easy to have similar results just pouring billions to some research. Actually even the good hygiene part was fucked up by overdoing it. Very big part of our problems/diseases are because of too sterile environment. There aren't just diminishing returns, it turns to negative returns after certain point.

Cancer is nature's way of thinning the herd. We should be finding ways to accommodate the billions of people already overpopulating the earth, rather than finding ways to keep people alive longer.

Of course, if I get cancer I'll change my viewpoint.
