New Mac Mini... You getting one?

After 1475 days of waiting, Apple unveils new Mac mini: quad-core, >32 GB RAM, all SSDs

Apple has just unveiled a new Mac mini at its October media event. In a space grey finish, every Mac mini now starts with quad-core CPU configurations. Apple will also offer six-core models for the first time. The new Mac mini can include up to 64 GB RAM, and all models feature solid state drives.

The Mac mini starts at $799, with various build-to-order upgrade options. Orders start today, with first deliveries from November 7.

On the back side, the Mac mini includes an array of ports: gigabit Ethernet, four Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI port, and USB-A. You can also configure it with 10 Gigabit Ethernet like the iMac Pro.

The new Mini also features the Apple T2 chip for security. Apple has redesigned the internals for better cooling. Apple is using recycled aluminium for the enclosure and 60% recycled plastics.

The most specced-out Mac mini can feature 64 GB RAM, 4.6GHz 6-core Core i7 CPUs, a 2 TB SDD and 10 Gigabit ethernet.

Fans of the Mac Mini have had to wait for a long time for this update. Before today, the last update to the product was in 2014. With this revision, Apple has dramatically updated the internal components, although the exterior has mostly stayed the same aside from the new space gray finish.

Yes maybe....

Currently I'm working on 2 x iMac 27" computers that while they still work perfectly, are getting pretty old now and are even un supported with the latest OS.

What I have been thinking about for a while is swapping these 2 computers for a single Mac Mini and an ultra wide monitor or 2 monitors but the old Mac mini would not support it. Glad I waited! The new Mac Mini looks perfect for what I want to do.

And good timing - my Internet speed has been upgraded to 1.5Gb/s which is now faster than my iMac can support. The new Mac Mini can be configured to ship with 10Gb Ethernet. Wow.

The killer though is an iMac configured the way I want (i7, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD, and 10Gb Ethernet is - fuck- $2719 ! Plus about another $1400 in Monitor hardware. Time to save my pennies..!

Well its to put on your desk really. Take a few pics of it to post online, and when people come round, you get say "Come look at this... Aint it cool?" and because they are your guests, they kinda have to say how nice it is, and how lucky you are to own it and other stuff that makes you feel good...

Is that what you mean?

EDIT: Plus, if you watch the video... It arrives in a FUCKING SPACESHIP !!! How cool is that?

It's not the most powerful machines that Apple offers, but then again it can ship with latest Final Cut Pro X.

Personally I just need a machine for mostly web stuff, so I would run Final Cut, Photoshop, Skype, email, and the usual light stuff. I would buy the 6 core CPU even though I probably don't need it. I care mostly about file throughput, so an SSD hard drive, 10GB Ethernet and fast ram is what catches my attention first.

My 2 x iMacs are configured to act as 1 big desktop which is a bit of a waste for one of the 2 machines, and buying 2 x new iMacs is overkill.

The Mac Pro is faster but the basic configuration I want chimes-in at over $4200 and besides, the technology that the current model is based on is a few years old, and in video rendering is not nearly as fast as the new Macbook pro.

The other good thing about them, is if you see one 'in the wild' its really easy to steal it. Fit inside your coat or bag real easy and as long as you snatch it quick enough, it probably won't be noticed missing that quick either...

Imagine the difficulty of stealing an iMac off of an office desk. You'd never get it out without people noticing you carrying, plus it would be obvious that it had gone off the dsk...

But that little mini, you could just put a bag over it casually, pick them both up, and no one would be any the wiser... Sweet !
