I have several friends that work there, so I hope they survive.
Data was stolen and released due to poor security or plain out theft (which is still considered poor security.)

Ratio of women to men is absolutely awful, even if underreported.

I cannot see why any guy would join this site. And that's just two of the factors.

This is a great question, as is, what are the implications and fall out of the other adult dating companies that are likely operating in the same manner?

Is Ashley Madison really an isolated case? I would assume they are one of the larger and more legitimate outfits, yikes.

This is going to destroy consumer confidence in adult dating websites

Did you look them up on the Ashley Madison floor plan document, "ALM Floor Plan - ports and names.pdf"?

Looks like the real cheaters were the site owners, lol. I guess it's true you should stick to what you know.

BTW I wonder how many of the male profiles checked their inbox at least once?

Found this in their TOS:

You acknowledge and understand that you may be communicating with such persons and that we are not responsible for such communications.

The list of data breaches that resulted in user data release of both Adult and Main stream companies is long. Few hit the media as hard as AM. Of those that have hit the media this hard I can think of less than 1% that go under.

Examples (limited to mainstream) you can search gfy if you want to see some of the adult ones.. off top of my head I can think of about 5 this year alone...

iCloud - celebgate - Chris you still rocking your Iphone connected to iCloud?
Drop box - more than once
Adobe - more than once
gmail - more than once
paypal - more than once even just today : PayPal Vulnerability Allows Hackers to Steal All Your Money
target - CC data
home depot - CC data
hotmail/outlook
yahoo
ebay
godaddy
ICANN - still under attack right now..
Android - google pay and google play
Itunes accounts
Github
Sony
Play station
web.com - Aug 19 93,000 CC data release
facebook Aug 14 user location data
facebook Aug 13 user account hack
Twitter
Snapchat

A number of major banks, trust companies, gov departments, hosting companies, domain reg companies, airlines,.. Square - payment solution earlier this month..

I agree that simple data security breach is not enough to kill products off, that happens.

However, discovering the entire product is a "fantasy" (or fraud, dependent one's own opinion)...

I think you're right on the money.

Consumer confidence won't drop in Google because Gmail got hacked - Gmail still does what it says on the box.

However with Ashley Madison we're talking about a site that has deliberately deceived consumers into thinking it was something it never was.

Yes, I wasn't referring to just the data breach, moreover the entire story which will not die and shows no sign of doings so, additionally the ratio if highly publicized could do serious damage.

I think its widely known in our industry that casual dating sites are mostly fantasy and many site blatantly tell their users that they make use of "fantasy bots".

Gmail was also not created with the intent of allowing people to cheat on their spouse.

This isn't "hey did you see the funny pictures that Roger sent Stacy?"

No, this is "Roger wants to cheat on Angela, maybe with Stacy."
