UPDATE: Kentucky Has Highest Rate of Student Homelessness

Quote:
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WSAZ/AP) -- Federal education data shows more than 30,000 students in Kentucky are homeless.

A media outlet in Lexington says its analysis shows Kentucky has the nation's highest rate of student homelessness.

The outlet says the number of homeless students in Kentucky has nearly doubled in less than six years, reaching a high of more than 35,000 students in the 2011-2012 school year.

"The kids -- it's never their fault. Never," said Dr. Patsy Lindsey, Director of Pupil Personnel, Title I and Homeless Coordinator at Ashland Independent Schools. "They don't deserve it. They don't want it. Parents don't want it either. Parents are struggling - it's a tough time."

Lindsey says her school district had more than 280 homeless students out of about 3,100 total students last year.

She said the district works closely with five shelters in the area, including Shelter of Hope in Ashland.

"A lot of times, if the child is constantly going from place to place, there's no sense of stability," said Debbie Sivis, executive director of Shelter of Hope.

The shelter helps families find affordable housing and hopefully a permanent home.

"They need a place to go," Sivis said. "We council them; we guide them. We help them get in contact with landlords. We help them find the resources to get into housing and then we can use some of our grant funds to help subsidize their housing until a federal subsidy takes over."

Sivis said the shelter works with Boyd and Greenup counties. She said there is a lack of affordable housing, especially in Ashland.

Lindsey said the high number can be partly attributed to the tough economy and job loss. However, she said the high number is not necessarily a bad thing. She said she thinks Kentucky probably doesn't have the highest rate of homelessness, but is just the best at tracking the homeless and getting them help.

"That's one of the reasons so many of them [homeless families] ave come to this area," Lindsey said. "Because we do have services that we can provide for them."

In 2013-2014, the number dropped slightly to a little more than 31,000. But that's still far more than the 17,716 homeless students recorded in 2006-2007.

Under definition by the U.S. Department of Education, children are considered homeless if they are living in a shelter, motel or campground, car, outside or with another family member due to loss of housing or economic hardship.

According to the data, here are some of the student homelessness rates in our region:

Lawrence County: 740 students homeless

Carter County: 857 students homeless

Boyd County: 455 students homeless

Lewis County: 194 students homeless

Greenup County: 407 students homeless

Elliott County: 109 students homeless

Johnson County: 14 students homeless

Martin County: 7 students homeless

Floyd County: 81 students homeless

Pike County: 580 students homeless

It's disgraceful what this woman is doing.

And even more disgraceful that the govt. can't simply fire her ass on the spot.

Amazing how public "service" is supposed to be about serving the people. But this bitch is making it all about her superstitious belief's instead.

Somehow she is saying that if she grants marriage licenses to gay people she will go to "hell".

Not sure how that all works. I was always told that all you had to do was ask for God's forgiveness and everything is cool.

So all she "technically" has to do to calm her imaginary fears would be to sign the marriage licenses. They are nothing more than a govt. invention anyway...nothing to do with that old book of fables that has been re-written so many times she calls "The Bible".

And then get on her knees and telepathically communicate with "God" and ask him to "forgive" her.
You know, because an imaginary supreme being is SO concerned with her life in a shit hole in Kentucky.

You know, the media should report this as the insanity that it is instead of a serious news story.

And then that same media is trying to tell us who we can and can't vote for in the election.
Disgusting.

Aahh, I didn't know she was an elected official.

And now I've read that the Kentucky State Legislature is a part-time deal. So to convene and remove her from office would (for some reason) cost a ton of money for the taxpayers.

Too bad all those public servants couldn't simply drive a couple of hours to the state capital and take care of this in a couple of hours and go home without it having to cost millions of dollars.

yup and that is why she is being so defiant. She knows how long and how much $$ it would take to remove her from office. Meanwhile she still gets her $80k per year and support for her grows.. Cause of the ignorant "Christians" she will prolly end up a millionaire before she is removed from office

I wonder if she has ever issued a marriage license to a couple with a religion other than christian? Would that not also go against christian beliefs as well, you know worshiping a different god. What about an atheist couple?

You raise a good point. The ESSENCE of Christianity is LOVE. Loving others. Seeking others before one's self. Sadly, self-righteous self-professed Christians who try to use the STATE to impose their morality on others are the worst witnesses for real Christianity. Real Christianity is rooted in transformative love. Condemnation doesn't save. Love (through the grace of God) does.

Sadly, this is lost in translation. No wonder so many people have a distorted view of God-those who profess to speak for Him let their SELVES get in the way of the true message. They seem fixated on homosexuality. There are tons of sins listed in the Bible, why just focus on homosexuality?

Respect! Standing for their beliefs.
By the way - it does not necessary have to do with hating gays.
For example I have no problems with gays and even sympathize with them (as they did not chose that, but were unfortunately born that way). And have no problem with their unions, however I have the problem with calling that unions a marriage.

I think the court did it's job in this case.

Look...I lived in South Carolina for 16 years.

That meant that on Saturday night the bars had to close. Because JESUS didn't want us to drink on Sunday (which is modern day made up shit that people just added to the ancient made up shit).

Also on Sunday, I could go to the 24 hour Walmart and buy food if I needed to. But if I wanted to buy a shirt, or a water hose, or anything except food...I had to wait until 1 p.m. in the afternoon because it would be disrespectable to JESUS.

Restaurants were not allowed to serve wine with their meals if they were within a certain distance of a church. And of course there were churches on every fucking corner. So going out to have a nice dinner with a glass of wine was difficult.

What I'm trying to say is: This is the year 2015. It's not 100 A.D. We don't live in the desert and herd goats. We know what a bacteria is. We know the Earth revolves around the sun. Etc., etc.

All things that the primitive tribe people who wrote a book of fables did NOT know.

None of us should be forced to live our lives because percentages of modern people have been brainwashed since childhood to "believe" this nonsense.

And I believe in PERSONAL freedom for citizens. I don't want or need a group of citizens voting to take MY freedom away. It's none of their business if 2 gay people want to get married. Who the fuck are these people to make that decision for others?

Now as for this religious nutcase in Kentucky...she is a govt. official. This isn't her personal life. Nobody is forcing her to get married to another woman. She has a sworn duty to uphold.
She could simply step down if her beliefs are so strong.

But she is refusing to.

She is deliberately hurting couples who want to get married. And as we all know...if you are NOT married and your significant other gets in a car wreck or some other catastrophe, you will have NO rights at the hospital. You'll have NO rights if the worst thing happened and your loved one died. And the list goes on.

I'm sorry, but I can't condone some self-righteous bitch doing the same old song and dance of trying to shove THEIR beliefs on everyone else.

Normally, you could just laugh at her ignorance and walk away.
But since she is the govt. official in charge of licenses...it becomes a different story.

She is fucking people's lives up because of her superstitious belief. And if she really had any sense of duty she would simply resign and go get a job at her fucking church.

By the way - it does not necessary have to do with hating gays.
For example I have no problems with gays and even sympathize with them (as they did not chose that, but were unfortunately born that way). And have no problem with their unions, however I have the problem with calling that unions a marriage.
But they don't get the same benifits as married people..

Sadly, this is lost in translation. No wonder so many people have a distorted view of God-those who profess to speak for Him let their SELVES get in the way of the true message. They seem fixated on homosexuality. There are tons of sins listed in the Bible, why just focus on homosexuality?

Yea, I'm not an expert or anything, but isn't one of the 10 commandments not to judge others? Yet seems time and time again, Christians are some of the most judgmental people you will ever meet.

LOL! No, that isn't one of the 10 commandments crockett.

Didn't you go to church or Sunday school when you were a little boy?

Religion is bullshit, but I would think that even you would at least know that much.

There ya go...crockett, it's a quote out of the bible, but not one of the ten commandments.

Now let's all pray to the imaginary "God" that this thread doesn't turn into a bunch of fucking "Ye's" and "Thou's" and other such King James of
England era verbiage.

Well, I knew it was in there somewhere.. Anyway, it's always nice to see how they like to pick and choose which parts of the bible to follow..

That's the genius of religion...you can interpret any way you want to because it's nothing but a bunch of fables and mysticism.

The amazing part is that people fall for it to this very day. The fear of what happens when you die is so strong that it negates otherwise intelligent people's rationality.

Well, let's not also forget the fear of being burnt at the stake or tortured to death played a pretty big role in its spread.. Christians of the past were just as good at killing people in the name of their holy book as modern day Islamist extremist..

You do that for a few hundred years and it's a great way of building a sheep herd of followers.. They weeded out the non believers and any sort of compitition early on.. It's taken 100s of years to break that cycle of willful ignorance and still even today people willingly follow this non sense..

People are free to believe what they choose. Whether that choice makes nonsense or sense to you. I'd rather have people being able to choose what others consider nonsense over not being able to make a personal choice because someone else thinks its nonsense.

I can agree with that.

Doesn't mean that it's not complete superstitious b.s. But if "believing" makes people feel better then fine with me.

It's the thought of the religious people constantly trying to shove that on to other people that gets me defensive.

Like this woman in Kentucky. She isn't "God". It isn't her place to make these judgements on the lives of other people.
Two people in love getting married doesn't hurt her in any way, shape, or form.

That's what always amazes me about the extremely religious people. They seem so obsessed with telling other people what they can and can't do.

Hell, the history of the persecution of our own industry is based on religious people deciding that sexuality is "evil".
