The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and activist news platform Syrian Revolution Talbiseh said warplanes believed to be Russian targeted mourners at a funeral in Homs province?s al-Ghanto village, killing four civilians. Homs-based activist Bebars al-Telawy said the civilians were burying a man who died from wounds sustained a day earlier when the planes struck.

Al-Ghanto, the town of Talbiseh and other areas north of the city of Homs were pounded with more than a dozen airstrikes Sunday, including government helicopters dropping barrel bombs in the village of Ter Maela, the activists said.

The state-news agency SANA reported army troops began a ground offensive in the area.

Making war is very messy.

Recently in Afghanistan US forces had bombed a hospital. The hospital claims they had identified themselves to both sides, and both sides knew about the location of the hospital. It seems the doctors believed they were safe and wouldn't be targeted. While that sounds like it should be "iron clad" it really isn't. Someone enters a number wrong on a computer or picks the wrong building on a map, someone gives permission to fire on a target when they shouldn't have, or someone fires on a target without feeling the need to get permission and....

When military forces are operating in areas where there are civilians, civilians will get hurt and killed. This has always been the case, and this will not change. It's even worse in some areas when the people fighting blend in with the civilians.

I am not saying this is acceptable, but this is part of the price the civilian population pays when war breaks out around them.

The video purports to show footage taken in Jobar, an eastern suburb of the capital, Damascus. The Syrian government and rebels have been fighting over Jobar for about two years; the video shows explosions and tanks firing in the middle of bombed-out streets. It is a surreal and hellish scene.

It's not clear who shot all of the video's footage, and the soundtrack of video game–style music definitely raises appropriate skepticism about its authenticity. But Eliot Higgins, founder of the investigative journalism outlet Bellingcat and an expert on scrutinizing footage from Syria, thinks the video is credible.

"It certainly looks like Jobar," Higgins wrote via email. "I've seen similar quality drone footage from elsewhere; looks like they've done a bit of post production with the colouring to make it look nicer."

If the video is authentic, it goes to show just how utterly devastated parts of Syria have been by the war. According to Syria Deeply, Jobar has been almost entirely depopulated by the past two years of intense fighting.
