For anyone who loves reading about the Space Race.... It seems in the late 1950s / early 1960s the Soviets used to have their Lunik spacecraft tour other countries. And at some point, the CIA "borrowed" it to take it apart, document, and photograph it....

There supposedly was a first Soviet woman astronaut in space, but it appears her space ship burned down and the soviets hushed it. Here's a radio transmission that some Italian radio enthusiasts intercepted and recorded:

Later after the event the USSR claimed that it was just some satellite that crashed.

The Soviets were so intent on winning the space race they sent a lot of people on one way trips into space

I bet there is a lot we still do not know about the Russian side of the Space Race. While their initial attempts were amazing, I wonder how many behind the scenes failures they had.
