Common Core Math, Thoughts?

I don't know much about it. All politics aside, Thought on it?

I don't know much about it, and I don't understand what I have seen. But I would like to be open minded enough to see the reasoning behind it. I have heard many were pissed to see the Roman Numeral System disappear.

All I know about common core is that you need to praise the process not the actual ability. So you would say "I like how you figured out that math problem" not "you are so smart for solving that math problem".

I actually think that concept makes sense and does not sound communist at all. But many people think it is all part of the communist take over of the USA.

What do you say comrades?

As a math guy i think it has it's bright spots. However it is too far reaching.
I think it should be more of a helpful hints course. Not an overhaul and must do things this way.

I have a fifteen year old kid in high school... Common core is stupid and pointless. The kids don't get it, the partners don't get it, and the teachers don't get it either.

Whatever though, it doesn't matter - Who needs math? When was the last time you had to "solve for x"?

Back in high school which was about 15 years ago

From the Common Core Grade 1 Addition and Subtraction
Quote:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.B.3
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Needlessly overcomplicates adding

I expect to be in the minority here but this is a much needed overhaul

In the past american kids learned math via rote memorization without really understanding it, common core does a lot to fix that but if teachers and parents dont get it, it makes it much more difficult to teach because they dont understand math, but have only memorized it.

Its a good thing really

I know we rarely agree, but that was an excellent argument; if it wasn't all commie and shit, I mean.

sounds pretty fucking stupid to me... numbers are, or aren't. If you applied it to English, you'd be constantly explaining how you arrived at the decision to spell each word like you did, within the sentence.

Is it also true that if you hand in a test, and have attempted to answer each question, that the act of answering each question even if you get the final answer wrong every time ensures you get marked at 100% ?

It helps kids understand math much better - rote memorization is a joke - need to be able to understand and apply the concepts.

It sucks because it's new and you don't get it, but if you or your children can't understand it, your kid is just as dumb as you are...and you can start worrying.

a 2 step problem now takes 108 steps or smth, and that's 'good'?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZEGijN_8R0

I must be missing a hell of a lot on this. Anyone able to confirm whether kids do or don't score 100% even if all answers are wrong on a test, if they show how they arrived at the wrong answer each time?

learning that 2 + 5 = 7 "by rote" is dumb?

knowing base 10 number system "by rote" is a joke?

w t f, please someone explain what I'm missing lol

take more picks from any of these gems:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=....0.zCHFHHMQ3BM

If ever the acronym KISS applied, surely this is it?

btw, you know you all learned your mother tongue by rote, right? Is that also considered old hat and a joke? Like I say, I *have* to be missing something here, are these examples made up or something?

That is a very smart move to improve the standard.
And how the fuck "the teachers do not understand it"? how stupid are the teachers then?

I see some things that I suppose is common core. Like square root and making students break it all down to 2, 3, 5, 7. Then circle duplicates to take them out. Silly and prone to errors.

That being said, now they are solving recognizing 4, 9, 16, 25, 36 etc. Or maybe their not and I'm making my kid do it that way... oopsie if so

Haven't seen 100% if wrong answer. Partial to no credit depending.

Thats teaching / coaching 101. You praise the work, not the skill/outcome. You can lower a childs IQ by telling them continually how smart they are (though according to related studies, thats roughly 80% of every parents tendency).

Think of it like this. Forget education. If you are a boxer and you have a good jab and i start telling you that you have the best jab in the world, the best i've seen and harp on and on about what a great jab you have, your tendency will be to throw fewer and fewer jabs. Your sense of identity becomes tied to this "great jab", you know you are constantly being measured by your peers by your "great jab" etc etc etc. So.... you spar with someone and they slip your jab and counter with ease. What do you do? You start throwing fewer and fewer jabs to protect your status/sense of identity... as you throw fewer and fewer, it suffers and gets worse. As it gets worse, you throw fewer and fewer and so on.

You praise the work because if i was coaching you, my end goal is to improve your jab. I praise hard work, when you work hard and place a high value on hard word. I praise your focus, your determination and effort and the end result, is those things improve and your jab improves.

That said, i'd say the biggest problem by far in US education is the very low standards and low demands, vs challenging everyone to reach beyond their perceived abilities and be continually raising the bar.

The aim is in the name.."Common Core". They want to make everyone common.

This is no different than "Board of Equalization".

While Capitalists are out making the world run, Marxists in the education and government sectors are destroying the pillars of Western society.

The noose is around our necks and soon they will kick out the stool.

Actually if I was told I have the best jab in the world I would throw it all the time. Then not develop an upper cut or other punches as well.

Its funny, math was never my strongest subject, but I found later in life that I use it more than you think. I like building things and use it almost weekly, especially geometry.

I would think that many here are stats junkies and use math daily.
