Tip and Tricks on how to get organized?

I am one of the most unorganized people I know, and I want to get organized. I have shit all over the place, and I joke that it's controlled chaos...which to a certain degree, is true. But the busier and busier I get, it's getting overwhelming. I try to delegate as much as I can, but an organization is only as organized as the organizer (see what I did there?).

What are some tips and tricks for organization that you use? Help a brother out, I'm lost in a sea of paper, with an albatross of unfinished tasks around my neck.

- Buy a bunch of filing cabinets for documents,
- One of those metal toolboxes on wheels for the garage + those wall mounted shits for hanging tools
- Rearrange or change your office space. We just moved offices and suddenly I find the day flying by and coding going much better.
- Spend a day or two getting your shit together, it will feel like you are getting something done and a break from your normal crap. Something really zen about sorting documents

Buy lots of hard drives for your computers -- have a few or more devices -- organize by topic overview -- you can always swap a hard drive if you have to. Put topics on USB sticks too. Don't back up your documents with Windows unless you are able to read the format on other OSs -- use fat32 not NTFS! cp or rsync backups on multiple places.

Scan your documents and buy a paper shredder. Only keep the documents you need for legal reasons or tax records. Scan those and destroy them when the document's statute of limitations expires.

Your fire insurance and risk will go down with the excessive paper gone.

Organizing your time? Good Luck.
I delegate a lot of repetitive tasks to my digital robot helpers I make ;o)

You can not possibly be worse than me.

1. Stick to your delegations. Delegate and let people do their job
2. Assign yourself tasks, cross them off as you go through your day. Stick your task list, do not deviate from the list. This is super hard. Don't do it ever day, especially if you have ADD like I do, reward yourself with ADD days and work how you want, but start learning your tasks and routine.
3. Use online software to keep you on your tasks so you don't forget what needs to be done later down the line when you fizzle out.
4. Do your tasks at the beginning of your day.

The most important thing for me is that I be in an uncluttered environment. For whatever the reason, I just don't get as much done when things are messy. so I just try to have as little amount of stuff as possible and only have nice stuff. Having less stuff makes it less likely that things will become cluttered and the nicer the stuff, the more inclined I am to not mess it up. I'm messy by nature so it's a coping strategy.

Don't allow yourself to take on any unnecessary new tasks until you've completed the ones you've got already.

Say no to unnecessary stuff, and get the essentials done.

Great advice so far!

Focus on ONE thing

Cut down your to do list to just ONE THING

Make sure that item is going to make a BIG IMPACT though.

I am the king of organization.

I use spreadsheets for nearly everything. If I talk to you about something and need to follow up with you, I add it a list in a spreadsheet. Every day I hit that list and I have a handy list of people I need to contact. Nothing gets forgotten about.
