![]() Hello everyone,
I was bored today and currently my country is living in a middle of a financial crisis, so that's why I compiled a really small list with a few tips for saving money, or at least making a wise use of it. 1 - Shopping: When you go shopping, especially grocery shopping: make a list and stick to it. Put in mind that you will only buy the things listed, and they must be really required. Take away all the optional stuff. Also remember to never go to grocery shop on an empty stomach. Or after a busy day of work. You'll be way more inclined to buy bad food or things you don't really need. 2 - Work: If possible, bring your own lunch to work every day. You'll save a lot of money and also drink water. Good for your health and the environment, plus you can save money by not buying soda or juice. 3 - Don't be penny wise, pound foolish: Many people try to cut costs by shaving off a few cents on items which they don't buy very often or were already cheap to begin with. Real savings can be found in big things, so start by looking at your cost of living (it's often cheaper to own a house than to rent one and make sure to shop around for low mortgage rates) and cost of transportation (I save a ton of money by going to work by train so I don't need a car). Living smaller/lower key than you can "afford" is one of the fastest most effective ways to save money. 4 - Earning on the side: Find something you enjoy doing. Most hobbies also have a way to earn money. 5 - Wait for it: When you plan to buy anything expensive, try to wait a month before buying it. If you still want it after a month, then you can buy it. After 15 days, you will think again if you really needed the thing you wanted to buy. 6 - Sell random stuff you don't need. Someone will buy it. 7 - Keep track of your daily spending. For one week, write down every purchase you make. Everything - even if it's something small like a bag of crisps. You will be shocked at how much money you is spending on small things you didn't really need. . What you do to save your money? ![]() |

Too bad that "shopping" is the first item on the "how to save money" list. I would suggest that the first item be SAVE MONEY FIRST.
It's a simple trick but it works really well. Regardless of how much money you make, the very first thing you should do with every pay check or commission check, is put some of it into a savings account right away. In other words, pay your savings account FIRST, before you buy anything. If you make $500 a week, pay yourself $50 FIRST. If you earn $1000 a week, pay yourself $100 FIRST.. Your savings account will add up fast. After you get a thousand or so in it, go to your bank and invest it into anything they have to offer such as a GIC or Term Deposit, even if the interest is low. Forcing yourself to save and getting some of your money slightly out of reach, you learn to live without it. If you have more money coming in but lack good savings discipline, consider this crazy idea : Borrow money from the bank to purchase an RRSP (Canada). Here's why: Let's say you borrow $10k from the bank and buy a $10k RRSP. First, it's an easy loan to get because the RRSP helps act as your guarantee to the bank. While the cost of the loan is more than the return on the RRSP, it still forces you into the habit of saving money because you have to pay back the loan, and, the cost of the RRSP can be deducted from this year's taxes. Of course, do this for only smaller RRSP's. Don't borrow more than you can afford to pay back in a year. Here's another : STOP USING YOUR CREDIT CARDS WHEN YOU SHOP. If you go out shopping and really want to buy that shiny new thing, use your debit card to buy it. If you don't have the money or can't afford it, don't buy it. Save some money and try again next month. Speaking of credit cards: If you are carrying a balance on several different cards, pay the card with the biggest debt and / or the biggest cost first, while making at least the minimum payments on all of your other cards. As you pay down each card to zero, concentrate your efforts on the other cards in the same order.

More on credit cards:
If you have many cards, consider cutting most of them. You don't need a lot - just keep one or 2. Credit card companies desperately want your business, which means you have the power to negotiate. If you are paying 18% on a credit card, you're paying way too much. You can easily get your rate down to 14% or even 9% just by calling them and asking for it. If they say no, tell them you received an offer by a competing card company. If your credit cards out high and you can't get a handle on them, you're still in luck. You can ask your bank or any credit card company for a "debt consolidation loan". By transferring all of your debts to a single account, you will get a much better interest rate and you will have only 1 bill payment to make. This saves you money and grief, and also repairs your bad credit.

Always remember $1 a day is $365 a year. How many dollars can you save on dumb stuff? Just buying better, no $5.00 coffees, bulk purchases of necessities, no overdrafts, etc.
$10 equals $3,650. Invested over 10-20 years equals a lot of money and you didn't even have to really save anything. |
