An Italian woman who was hitch hiking from Italy to Israel to promote world peace was raped and murdered by Muslims in Turkey. Via The New York Times: The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the northern city of Gebze on Friday. She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people. Turkish police say they have detained a man in connection with the killing. Situations like these remind me of the military.
Everyone, well most people, want their country to have a strong military. Very few people want their kids serving in the military. Military families, officers, sure, but nobody wants their kid to be an infantryman. Most people like to think they are decent non-prejudice human beings (even though prejudice is hardwired into us through hundreds of thousands of years of life.) We like the idea of somebody else running through a "supposed dangerous place" and proving that it's not dangerous at all. Hugs and kisses. The tune changes when it's our own kids. Always fun and games when it's "somebody else's responsibility," but when it comes down to the person doing the ranting putting their skin in the game, the stories change very very fast. War, education, working 60 hour work weeks, healthcare, taxes. Everyone always wants the other guy to do the bitch work while they sit safely on the sidelines preaching about what is right and wrong as if they would be willing to do it themselves, yet when it comes down to doing something down and dirty, they run for the hills. Couch quarterbacking.
