Email addresses bombarded with spam - any way to fix at server level?

Am using amerinoc managed VPS and it has spam assassin running on it. It doesn't seem to work at all because all sorts of stuff still gets through. Stuff that has no business getting through a spam filter since they often have zip files and are just blatant spam.

I have it on low threshold and have it set to delete spam and have a blacklist a mile long.

Short of telling every user to run their email account through gmail servers, is there any good fixes out there that will prevent this stuff from getting through to end users?

A lot of it these days seems to show the sender as having the same email address as the person receiving it. Snippet from a header of a recent spam. Message was nothing but a zip file sent from the same email address as the recipient. No body message.

As you know, but I will repeat: DO NOT OPEN ANY ZIP FILES. I did so (like an idiot) and got the locky virus. This is ransomware that will encrypt your files and ask you to send Bitcoin payments to a P.O.Box. Even after sending numerous payments they do not decrypyt the files (as I have been told, I did not send any money).

All I could do was re-direct to my Gmail accounts and now their spam filter catches it. Definitely been more since about Dec.

Ya unfortunately I have a bunch of domains on the server for different companies and most of the end users are not really tech savvy I wish I could just send them all a tutorial link on how to route their address through gmail but most of them won't have a clue what I am even talking about. Kind of hoping there's some way of stopping it at the server, otherwise I'll be making house calls to configure all these peoples' email clients.

Look into Greylisting. It's a rather effective technique, though nothing in the fight against spam will ever be perfect. It won't block all spam, but it cleans up a lot of it from ever reaching your inbox(es).

well I suppose it's possible to re-direct all their emails TO Gmail for them, then have Gmail re-direct it back? Don't know how that would work tho.

Programmers? Email experts? Anyone?

There has been a plague of fake invoice due phishing spam for me. The Zip file hacks attached. I just mark them as spam and delete them. The spam filter is learning the sources and messages and they are now mostly flagged as spam.

I just run the delete all messages marked as spam in Thunderbird. It's just aggravating but not a crisis. Same with the wonder penis pill and dating site scams.

email

Been using Mail Washer Pro for years. Besides filters, it catches a lot of spam. The great part is, it just shows you the email subject or you can look at the message. This way you can delete messages before downloading them.

Definitely worth the $30 yearly fee.

Good to know it's not just me (in a weird way). What got me was the "invoice" zip file looked like it came from a company I had just started doing business with. So I thought, "Oh let me see if I made any sales..." DOH!!
