Peatier the better!
I like cocktails that incorporate Laphroaig to add the smokiness. My favorite scotch (also on the peaty side) is Ardbeg Uigeadail. Went to a whiskey bar with a huge selection and did a bunch of flights until I settled on that one ![]() This month I'm drinking the Glenfarclas 12 and Ableton 12 (both gifts). Smooth, really approachable balanced scotches and good price points. I think whiskey is a very personal thing, you have to just start doing flights and figure out what flavor profile you like. |

I know this dude who has an actual, physical catalog, with pictures and descriptions, of all the single malts he owns. My point is you can take this too far. Better to stick with Macallan 18 and not go down that rabbit hole.

I buy Glenlivet 18 as my Costco budget scotch. I love Macallan 18 but it used to be $120-130 a bottle and now its $250 or something insane. I just cant get myself to pay that much when I can knock out the bottle in a couple days.

I have a bottle of Macallan 12 in my office. I'm afraid to go 18, that rabbit hole will quickly find its way down to 25.

I had a bad Mccallan habit once, gets even more expensive when you drink it in restaurants/bars. Took up coke it's cheaper. Actually I went back to Kentucky whiskey.

I'm impressed that Macallan has successfully leveraged their branding into stepping away from an age statement
![]() In scotland to sell a scotch as 18 year, every drop in there has to be minimum 18 years, and if 1997 was a bad year then you're actually getting a 19 year scotch in there. Now when you get Macallan Ruby, it is "around" 18 years but is blended with a larger range. This kind of move would destroy most distillers, but Macallan is synonymous with quality scotch so they can get away with it. |

Ah I did not know that. One thing I found interesting was how scotch will stop aging when it is bottled. The opposite of a wine which continues to do its thing as long as you store it properly.

Close your eyes when you drink it. It tastes like you just licked a freshly laid asphalt road.

the aging is tied to the barrel and the barrels ability to 'breath' I think... breath in and out... subtle nuances in flavor are being exchanged and created while the barrel is at rest. seems like this would stop once bottled.

Seriously though - tastes *EXACTLY* like that
My go-to single malt is Auchentoshan 12 yr (the normal one that's aged in a sherry cask) - HIGHLY recommend it if you are into sweeter whisky's that don't taste like roadworks, and if that's not available then I usually go for "The Dalmore". As for blendeds when I want to mix with Coke, I usually prefer Monkey Shoulder, Crown Royal and Tullamore Dew. I do from time to time buy something new to try out though, but 9/10 times it's these. ![]()

It is worth going down that rabbit hole though. I have a whisky speciality shop 200 meters from our office and they can always recommend something new... They introduced me to that Auchentoshan shit (that i'd never heard of) which turned out to be the best whisky I'd ever drank.
