This is why I don't mind our enormous military budget

....because we've got mother fucking lazer beams for our air planes!!!

Next Big Future: US Air Force will have first combat lasers on large C-17 and C-130s and then later miniaturized for F-16 and F-35 fighter jets

Air Force Research Laboratory officials have said they plan to have a program of record for air-fired laser weapons in place by 2023.

Ground testing of a laser weapon called the High Energy Laser, or HEL, was slated to take place last year at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., service officials said. The High Energy Laser test is being conducted by the Air Force Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.

The first airborne tests are expected to take place by 2021, Air Force officials have said.

The developmental efforts are focused on increasing the power, precision and guidance of existing laser weapon applications with the hope of moving from 10-kilowatts up to 100 kilowatts.

Much of the needed development involves engineering the size weight and power trades on an aircraft needed to accommodate an on-board laser weapon. Developing a mobile power-source small enough to integrate onto a fast-moving fighter jet remains a challenge for laser technology.

The Air Force plans to begin firing laser weapons from larger platforms such as C-17s and C-130s until the technological miniaturization efforts can configure the weapon to fire from fighter jets such as an F-15, F-16 or F-35.

For me it's a reason to oppose the enormous military budget. The same budget gave us drones, which has allowed Obummer to drone strike the fuck out of people, with a high innocent casualty percentage. This of course breeds more terrorism (I mean hey, if someone droned your kid, you might seek retaliation too), and makes us less safe.

Of course I might be a fan of having such weaponry if it were being used responsibly and for defense, but we're talking about the USSA here.

In the 1960s people were complaining about how much money we were spending on our military while at the same time they were developing computers and ARPANET.

Nearly all of the technology we have today is because of our military and NASA. (Did you know NASA had computers around the world linked up to track space flights before we had satellites?) Computers, the Internet, GPS, satellite radio, cell phones.... fucking battery powered anything....

And all of this money goes back into the community anyhow. When the US military says "We need to build a new aircraft carrier" it means tens of thousands of jobs - people to design it, plan it, build it, orders for steel and everything else...

They technology they are working on today with lasers.... God only knows how that will change our future. For all we know we'll be getting our mobile devices powered by lasers twenty years from now.

yes yes the world owes the US-bomb-dropping-napalm-throwing-agent-orange-dispensing military SOOOOOOOOOOOO much....

I like how you put the US military and NASA in the same sentence

how the crips make the world a better place:
1) they make people make better alarm systems
2) they make people buy guns and this gun money goes in to the community
3) they make people employ more police officers
4) they make jobs, prison staff, bounty hunters, funeral homes

when the cripps say "we need to shoot up the bloods" this means tens of thousands of jobs in the USA

dude...the US military and government is the cancer of the world...you are worse than cancer you are anthrax...it is hilarious that you try to spin your terrorism as some sort of contribution to humanity LOLOLOLOL you are so fucking brain washed that you actually believe you guys do good while dropping more bombs than everybody else in history combined...

Unfortunately, asymmetrical warfare is today's issue.

This is money misspent with rather useless results. Our national infrastructure is rotting and we ready for a war with Darth Vader that will probably never happen. There are jobs to be created in other ways.

What is the non military use for this advancement? Laser power transmission beams that cost 10 times what power wires cost and fry birds 600% faster?

when ISIS says "lets blow shit up" it means tens of thousands of jobs- people to make the bombs, smugglers to help them cross the boarder, safe houses to hide, police to chase them, coffins for the victims, jobs for journalists, jobs for right wing propaganda merchandise...

when boko haram says "lets kidnap 100-s of schoolgirls" it means tens of thousands of jobs- newspapers sell, police go after them, hospitals full of wounded, weapons smugglers make money, kidnap money in to the community, security for schools...literally 10.000s of jobs!

when kim jong il says "lets put people in concentration camps with their family" it literally creates 10.000s of jobs! camp operators, camp equipment manufactureres, roads built to remote areas, slave labor profits go in to the community, luxury goods get purchased wit this money...

when nazis say "lets gas the jews" it literally means 10.000s of jobs...mustard gas producers make money, gold teeth are molten down and this money goes in to the community, furnace builders get contracts for new furnaces, construction companies make concentration camps...literally 10.000s of jobs...

But it doesn't work that way. The government - any government - cannot say "We are going to give you ten billion dollars, now do something with lasers".

Stupid to announce that you'll get around to doing something cool in 7 years. This is one of our (USA) biggest weaknesses. Now China or USSR will do it, and finish implementation, within the year

Maybe it's a useless program as some people have stated above so these countries will just be closer (especially Russia) to broke with all the military spending

The brain implant stuff DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is doing sounds pretty cool too. Remind me of "Ghost In The Shell"

That's correct, yet nearly all of the modern technology we have today is because of the US military. Nearly everything the US military does has civilian applications.

Let's see if I can blow your mind.... You've heard about them raising the American flag on Iwo Jima, right? That picture was printed in Guam and then TRANSMITTED to New York. You read that right - Before nearly anyone had a television, before the fax machine existed, the United States military had the ability to send photos via radio waves. Across oceans. LOL.

GPS, satellite radio, the microwave, nuclear power, canned food, nylons, epi pens, Penicillin, radar, air travel, super glue, computers, digital photography....

Why?

That's a serious question. It will help explain the logic some have behind Government Spending.

OK to waste Trillions on killing people, but not on saving them.

Only because they're given the money to do the research.

@rochard I hate to break it to you:

if a government decides to throw money at a murder machine, it in no way means that the murder machine is responsible for any technological advancements made because the ruling class wants to send the middle and lower class to fight for the ruling classes financial interests...

it in no way suggests or implies that humanity would not have made these inventions anyway...

its like saying kim yong il is the greatest "inventor" in his country because all the research money goes to N.korea military...if it was not for the N.korea military and kim yong il, no scientific breakthrough would be possible...

in reality: if the US """"""""""defense""""""""""" budget was given to indian and chineese scientists, because researching anything in the USA today is ridiculously expensive, humanity would advance like never before in history....the US army would not set back humanity globally with its bullshit wars and destruction, even more funds globally could be steered away from war and put in to education and research, and the world could get on with science and not fighting...

the US amry is the cancer of the world....you are to science what the inquisition was in the middle ages...every bomb you drop, you retard humanity a bit more...
