SEO questions

Simple questions actually. Putting the question here hoping that not just the SEO guys will answer but that site owners that have had positive or negative results will also answer.

Is using "link dumps" good or bad SEO techniques?

Is using "Adult directory submissions" good or bad SEO techniques?

There is so much conflicting info out there so I figured maybe this was the better place to ask.

Those that actually know and do chime in usually only to be shouted down by those who don't know and don't do. You won't get solid advice - you'll just get opinions of people who have no search rankings to back up their "expertise"

The quality of backlinks with regard to their usefulness is 100% relevant to the quality of the competitors backlinks.

A link dump can be fine, providing that your script is written properly.

It needs to rewrite the submitted link URL differently. Make the link within your domain by hiding your URLs, and make sure that those that submit give you a decently written description of "X" amount of characters.

You may want to manually approve until you get a decent amount of trusted submitters.

Bad:

Title: Whore sucks monster cock

URL: h ttp://sponsor.com/affiliate/hosted-gallery/11123434657=AffID12345

Good:

Title: Phone sex operator named Shannon sucks on poser Crip black dude gang member's small black cock while he surfs CNN looking for more news stories to copy and paste on adult webmaster board GFY and ends up rejecting him anyways because he is a grandfather that works at PayPal.

URL: htt p://www.yoursite.com/links/that-gallery

So how exactly does him having a script help with him submitting his site to link dumps and adult directories?

There are good link dumps and directories, and there are bad link dumps and directories. Submitting to the good ones will help you rank, submitting to the bad ones won't.

As a point of note, it seems most of the link dumps out there put your link into an iframe, I'm not sure how helpful that is in SEO terms.

Try to submit to only relevant sites (within your own niche) and avoid spammy sites that have hundreds of links that are added automatically. Usually, the best sites manually approve links.

Let's clear up some misconceptions here. A lot of people will comment without really knowing what they're talking about because they just repeat the received wisdom which originates from Google itself.

You have to STOP listening to Google!

What they do is they decide they want to stop webmasters gaming their algorithm, and whilst the algorithm itself will detect certain things, a lot of the battle against spammy sites is fought by FUD. Don't get taken in by Google FUD and concentrate on what works, and you will be better off. Very few links can actually hurt your website. At worst a weak backlink will just have no effect.

So, it's not a question of whether it's a link dump or a directory, or whatever else. What matters is:

Relevancy;
Authority;
Diversification.

Taking relevancy first, it does not follow that the sites you get links from have to be in the same niche. Suppose that the BBC website, or the New York Times, did an article on porn, and they linked out to a particular porn site. Unlikely I know, but just suppose. Would Google look at that link and say "but this is a news site, this link can't possibly be relevant, therefore I don't trust this link"? No. It would look at the text surrounding the link, it would look at the theme of the page, decide that it's about "porn", it would note that it trusts this website (BBC or NYTimes or whatever it is) very highly, and would decide therefore that this must be a link out to a site that relates to porn that it should trust highly. That site could expect a massive boost in the SERPS from such a link.

This leads on to authority, and that means simply backlink profile. Those websites get their authority, or trust if you like, from the massive amount of backlinks they accumulate daily - in addition to the way in which the websites are run. Which means, for your backlinks to have the desired effect, you need to look at the backlink profiles of the sites you are getting them from. A directory with a strong backlink profile will give you more of a boost than a link from a niche related site with few backlinks.

Lastly diversification. Do you think that all of the BBC's or the NYTimes' backlinks point to the home page? No, they mostly point to article pages. So to make your backlink profile look natural, you have to replicate this to some degree. That's where linkdumps can help. Use them to get a varied backlink profile. Not only varied in terms of the deep linking, but also in terms of your anchor texts. You probably won't get much direct SEO benefit from them but used in conjunction with other strategies it will make your overall domain easier to rank.

The trouble with porn link directories is many of them don't have the strong backlink profile needed, and most of them don't put your link on a relevant article page, to give the authority and relevancy you're looking for.

There is one such directory however, not a million miles from here.....ahem, cough....

My opinion is to leave link dumps alone. By providing solid content and working on the quality of your site you can grow organic traffic from Google and the other search engines reliably.

The challenge with link dumps are the link neighbourhoods. It's possible someone in the neighbourhood will get defined as spammy and then everyone is affected.

Even if the links included as part of the dump are relevant and above board at the time, it's possible the other site might try something else out and then your site can be affected.

Instead, encourage your site visitors to link to your content via their social media accounts and share. Those are more powerful links and can build your traffic via search and social at the same time:

Yep, getting backlinks that are contextual and similar niche works best for me. Back in the day, and when they also worked better, I just used dumps and directories as a last resort if I couldn't find good link trades, or just made more blogs to trade links with myself.

A backlink counts if it comes from a site with higher authority than yours and has relevant content compared to your site. Linkdumps and Directory are full of different sites with different content so I believe they you give you any juice. They might even arm you if they have spammy sites in their listing.

If you don't care about SEO and are looking for traffic, if they send you any, then you can add your site...
