Just come out of central station and walk straight down the Damrak opposite. There's loads of hotels and appartment places and your only 2 mins from the red light area.

Check out the Grasshopper pub.

few tips:

-Redlight district isn't what it used to be.
Over half is closed, a daytrip to a few cities will be nicer, like Utrecht, Valkenburg, or Nijmegen (From a bridge too far, oldest city, walking city of the world, summercity of Holland, if going here let me know )

-Take a hotel a few blocks away. saves you money and losing night sleep.
starting from 3 stars most hotels are do able, i would go for 4 or 5 stars.
Smoking in a hotel.. Forget it.
You can't even freely smoke in most coffeeshops anymore, only in the smoke rooms...

-Everything is close by, if staying for the shop(s)(ing) walking will do, tram/bus/bike for transport is very do-able.
(You will need to buy a stupid public transport card, possible on pretty much every station) and pre load it, check in AND out (else it cost you ?10!!!), also for train use you must have at least ?20 on it... miss the check out on the station and the ?20 is gone..)

-Watch out for pocketpickers, even cops get picked... Mostley it will be east europeans, they do stand out...

oke oke the important one:

-A Coffeeshop can be found in almost every big city, not all easily though, Amsterdam will be more expensive, prices range from 8 to 10 euro per gram.
(Nijmegen as an example has over 10, although that's a lot nowadays, all are in walking distance)

hope it helps, feel free to shoot any question!

Maybe if so many people visit our proud small country we should give a bit of travel advice.

Do i need to say parking a car will be expensive, up to what is it these days? ?25 a day?
If you even can find a parking space...
Hotels are even cheaper!

And if in Holland, do try Stroopwafels, Drop, Haagse Hopjes, our cheese and buy a Kaasschaaf (LOL, most of our neighbours from Belgium don't know what those are).

Maybe some more people can jump in and give more tips!

Best parking near the center is
https://www.parkingcentrumoosterdok.nl
13 euro for 24 hours. It is behind Double Tree by Hilton Hotel next to the trainstation.

Maybe there is a living boat for rent, than you can sit outside and smoke.
Reviews, look on tripadvisor.

Really any hotel will do.
If 4-5 star it will be nice.

I can't recommend a specific hotel.
I would take a boutique hotel, something a bit more special,
like: The Toren, Keizersgracht 164, 1015 CZ, Amsterdam
or: Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, John M. Keynesplein 2, 1066 EP Amsterdam
or: Park Plaza Vondelpark, Koninginneweg 34 -36, 1075 CZ Amsterdam
but that's me/

Use google, find a hotel near the centre, if needed near public transport.

Booking a last minute should be cheaper as well.
And don't take a hotel incl. breakfast, will be cheaper to eat outside.
Some Hotels charge up to ?20 for breakfast! crazy.

renting a room for your car almost is cheaper!
I like the livingboat suggestion! I used to live on one... Best time ever!
