at this point I'm woodshedding my chops and writing a few songs, I would like to be able to record this with a drum machine, just for writing purposes. what tools do I need? which 'device' can I buy, like to record to a hard drive. have bass, mics, drum machine and that stuff... I use PC, not looking for a recording studio capabilities so mush as a simple method to document my work. thanks in advance guys.

You could use a Native Instruments Maschine and a good Audio Interface.
Or you could just use a good Audio Interface by itself and add Ableton Live. Best place to learn is gearslutz.com |

Are you on a Mac? If so, check out Garage Band - its included with O/XS. Or if you want something really heavy duty, check out Logic Pro X. Both are really powerful, let you record to HD, etc.
