VPS gets slow for a few hours every day

Could that be when the hosting company runs stats, or will it more likely be a noisy neighbor?

VPS is running out of ram? I would personally stay away from hostgator.

It might be some log analyzer being run, or it might be something that backs up your files. Run "top" in ssh when it happens to see what's causing the load.

My guess would be it's the HOST machine running out of ram and/or cpu capacity. Particularly if the slowdown happens during peak internet traffic hours. But that would depend on knowing how oversold HG runs it's VPS service.

Yep, initially I assumed that was the issue, but then I realized my sites can be busy at certain times of the day and be fine, whereas at this one time of the day even if my sites are quiet, they are always running at snail pace and sometimes even dying for a bit

It's in the evening when it happens, but not much load change on my sites, so yeah I'm suspecting the Host machine too

Yeah, that very well could be the culprit. HG is probably stuffing their boxes too full of customers.

I bet they are, any advice where to move to, I'm not ready to switch yet but I need to at least start my research. I pay approx $100 for this

2 GB RAM
2 Cores CPU
120 GB Disk Space
1.5 TB Bandwidth

Honestly I would suggest you contact support first to see if they will move your VM to a new, less congested box. Failing that, and it's been a while since I've used another host that wasn't myself, But I had a pretty good experience with Digital Ocean. Their VM's aren't managed though, so that may be an issue.

Thanks, I've got them on now, seeing if they're going to admit it's them or not

I would bet that it is happening during a backup. And that one of the other users is running something like a tube or tgp with hundreds of thousands of thumbnail pics. They kill the input /output for backups.

You might try asking them to move you to another box. With their admin setup it is just a couple of clicks on their part and a minute or two of downtime.

You could well be right, if it's that easy to move me I wish they would

It's just gone from 2nd line to a 'higher-level administrator'

It should be very easy for them to move your VM instance to another machine with little effort.

When I request that, instead they attempt to sell me an upgrade

"Unfortunately I cannot do that, but if you were to purchase a new VPS, we can transfer your content from one VPS to the other. This will update the software and hardware for your VPS. However, I cannot simply move the VPS, I do apologize."

This is what they conclude, still with them now

"it looks like the main issue is your apache compiling is fairly old, we are going to need to re-compile your apache build. This appears to be the issue."

Does this sound possible?

In my semi-expert opinion, not really. An outdated apache will run just as fine as the day it was released. It almost certainly wouldn't cause the sudden slowdowns that you're describing.

I would say you need more ram. I have a VPS and it has 6 gigs (I pay $30 a month for the extra 3 gigs of ram)

Thing is, I've been in exactly this situation before, but back then I had more traffic, to fix it I upgraded the RAM of the VPS, now I have less traffic and I have the problem again. I know it would probably fix it, could be a cheap fix not much bother, also feels wrong though to keep paying HG more money to fix stuff which shouldn't be broken

Increasing RAM doesn't address the problem, it's a Band-Aid that cost additional money that may not be needed. It's most likely not needed.

A bigger bat isn't going to get you more home runs if you can't snap your wrists.

Don't listen to him! He knows nothing about servers!

jking don't listen to me cause I know very little about servers but I just think 2 gigs of ram for today's WP and scripts is too little for anything other than a family home page.. again what do I know and good luck

Running a 30+k/day WP tube on a VPS with 2GB RAM. loads faster than Google.

Hostgator is a joke. I would switch ASAP, don't wait until the shit hits the fan you can get decent fully managed VPS from Wiredtree for about $50/month.

I bet you had malicious files injected into your folders. That same thing happened to me when i was with host gator, And i am going through it now still even after i changed hossts. After changing hosts, it went away for 3 weeks..

im starting to think it has something to do with Server software updates.

If you're having problems with your sites being hacked on multiple hosts, the hosts likely aren't the problem. There's a security vulnerability somewhere in your sites.

This happened to us recently. The culprit was a USER who was basically spamming a high value page on our site and flooding out the RAM.

I don't know how this is done but does anyone know the best way to stop it, other than (a) increasing RAM or (b) blocking the user out using HTACCESS ?

If you have someone abusing your site it would probably be best to block them. I would suggest you block their IP address from even connecting to the server. See the link below.
