Woman denied $43 million jackpot offered steak dinner

(CNN)It was a selfie she thought was worth nearly $43 million.
Katrina Bookman hit the jackpot on a slot machine in late August at Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens. She even took an excited self-portrait with the machine displaying her winnings: $42,949,672. It would have been the largest slot machine jackpot in US history.

"I can't even describe the feeling. It's like my whole body just got numb," Bookman told CNN affilate WABC.
But when she came back the next day to find out the exact size of her jackpot, a casino employee crushed her excitement.
"I said, 'So what did I win? He said, 'You didn't win nothing,'" she told WABC.
The New York State Gaming Commission said that Bookman's machine had malfunctioned. The machine, like all the ones in the casino, has a disclaimer stating, "Malfunctions void all pays and plays."
Instead, the casino offered Bookman a complimentary steak dinner.
"All I could think about was my family," Bookman told WABC, her voice breaking. She grew up in foster care and raised 4 children as a single mother.

I would bet there is a lawsuit to be had there. not for the amount won obviously, but for false advertising at very least. A casino can't knowingly put out defective machines and pick and choose whether a win is legit or not--without sabotage of course. would anyone play at a casino and use their machines if this happened even more than once? At very least they should settle it before it gets to that point.

I think PR Glen is right....a civil suit is certainly in order, disclaimers aren't worth the paper they are written on if there is any form of negligence, failure to properly maintain, etc I bet lawyers are beating her door down, she wont get 42M but she will be set for the rest of her life when the dust settles....just my $0.02

Precisely that. To me, this looks like they could deny "any" winner with the catch-all "malfunction" story.

The Sphinx slot machine has an advertised max win in that casino of $6500.

She triggered a win and for some reason the machine displayed "$42,949,672.76"

The machine was pulled to investigate and repair, since it should never display more than $6500.

Yep, they should have paid her the 6500 along with the dinner. Cheaper than getting lawyers and bad publicity involved

The commission said that by law they can only award Bookman her actual winnings of $2.25, printed by the machine.

"They win, and now the house doesn't want to pay out. To me that's unfair," says Bookman's attorney, Alan Ripka. He's fighting for the casino to pay Bookman the maximum amount allowed by the Sphinx slot machine -- $6,500.

Its a penny slot machine...just looking for a fast buck when in reality she knows she only won $2.25. No leg to stand on.

She knew she didnt win and lawyered up before going back in being told the truth...she got a steak dinner, prob worth more than the $2.25 she actually won

I have a feeling she will get more in some kind of quick settlement. It won't be near that amount, but I won't be shocked if they offer her like $50K to go away and she takes it.

She should lawyer up. It's not her fault the machine malfunctioned. It;s the fault of the casino. good luck to them proving it was an act of god and still allowed people to pump the machine with money.

I suspect Casinos have reasons why it's not good policy to ever pay over what someone actually won, even though on paper it looks like a cheaper way to hush everything up. Technically they already bent their own policy by paying the $2.25 which breaks their "wins are void if the machine malfunctions" policy.

They likely factor in that If she took them to court they'd win anyway, she likely isn't in a position to sue them and from a publicity standpoint, any customer that see's the non payment of a non win as an issue, will forget soon enough and resume their gambling at that casino as normal.

How does a machine read out on the screen winning millions when it's just a few bucks? Something extremely corrupt about that.

If a machine says max payout of 10k and on the next roll It said I won 1 billion, I would know it was a glitch and demand nothing as any reasonable person would know it was a glitch. I would ask for a free buffet dinner though!

I won 53K on a machine in NZ many years back - They had to send data to some place and receive verification - The worst thing was I didn't have ID - I had to get a cab home and pick up my passport - I wasnt happy leaving without the money in my clammy little hands...

slots/keno/video machines frequently malfunction esp during power outtages. most save your credits, some older ones don't. either way its private property and if indian, sovereign land so good luck with that

This scenario has occurred a number of times in the past.

The disclaimer and machine malfunction, always proves to be enough legally, and the player ends up with nothing or very little.
