And reporters do this all the time, just see another old cnn video:

Trump supporter was explaining cnn anchor about misquoting. Anchor thought it was all perfectly fine as "Trump said it"

The fact that quoting part of the quote gives completely different message did not enter her mind...

This is just random example, but you can see how easily it is to manipulate opinions by misquoting. And that is just one tool for manipulating and twisting.
