Urgent: update your Whois records before December 1

Urgent: update your Whois records before December 1

Do this now to avoid a big pain in the future.

Hopefully my U.S. readers are getting ready to enjoy turkey and stuffing right now, but you need to get back to work before the end of the month.

As I discussed on this week’s podcast, a new domain name transfer policy goes into effect on December 1. The key change has to do with registrant transfers rather than registrar transfers. Not taking action before December 1 could result in a big hassle.

Essentially, if you make a change to your registrant name, organization name or email address on a domain once the new policy goes into effect, both the new and old registrant have to approve the change. Even if you make a minor change in which you remain the registrant, you’ll have to click on multiple emails from the registrar to approve the change. Also, unless your registrar provides an opt-out and you select it, these changes will result in a 60-day transfer lock on your domain.

So here’s your homework for the rest of the month: check the whois records on your domain name portfolio to make sure you have accurate information in the registrant fields. Make corrections now while it’s still easy.

you will no longer be able to update domain contacts just by pressing submit. you will need to confirm with the old contact and new before any change takes place.

so if you have an old email you no longer have access to in whois, you are going to be in trouble if you don't update now.

or if you bought a domain from someone and never updated the whois, you are going to be in trouble, etc.

if there are any changes you want to make to your domain contacts, it will be much easier now than it will be on december 1st.

GoDaddy had the 60 day lock before but not "Essentially, if you make a change to your registrant name, organization name or email address on a domain once the new policy goes into effect, both the new and old registrant have to approve the change."

So basically if ya don't have a current live email that works gonna be tough to approve any changes. For those that use privacy on their domains that doesn't actually forward to ya or privacy services that change their anonymous email address every month etc... could cause issues as well as the whois service would have to approve changes. Might wanna send yourself an email if using private whois to see if it actually forwards to ya as some do and some don't based on my past usage.

Would seem easier to just force 2 factor security across the board as I'm sure this will cause headaches. So best to make sure all your domains are using an email address now that actually reaches ya and not old dead emails, previous owner emails, etc...

Not sure I'd trust her internet competence.

If your talking Streamate/CamBuilder years ago when I set mine up I have them listed as registrant with their address on whois but the email & phone number are my own.

ICANN gives Whois privacy services breathing room on new transfer policy

Board chairman instructs ICANN to defer compliance on part of new transfer policy.

On December 1, a new domain name transfer policy went into effect that requires both the previous and new registrant of a domain name to approve changes to certain registrant information.

This creates an unintended headache for whois privacy and proxy services, as the approval would be required whenever privacy is added or removed. (Learn more about this in DNW Podcast #111.)

Yesterday, ICANN chairman Stephen Crocker informed GNSO Council chair James Bladel that he would instruct ICANN?s compliance group to defer enforcement actions on the new transfer policy as it relates to privacy and proxy services.

This gives privacy and proxy services some breathing room while a new solution is devised.

The deferral does not appear to contemplate a second challenge for some proxy services, however. Some of these services cycle through masked registrant email addresses as a way to cut down on spam. Technically, every time a new email is added to the registrant in whois, the transfer policy approval process will be triggered.
