regarding the international Child Ombudsman, circumcising is child abuse. Just like cut of clitoreses. But it is religion, than people look the other way.

Wrong. You don't know your own body. Your frenum is not cut off during circumcision so its not at all like female genital mutilation.

LOL... "average".. Great way to cover up your shortcomings, eh boy? Ever wonder why your "average" cousin charges you an extra $5 vs any hairy sex starved Albanian? Definitely not because of your "average" dick size, serbie...

before I begin I want to state that I haven't read this thread yet beyond Pheonix's opening post. I will read it, I just can't deal with some of what I know I'll read there right now. thanks in advance to those of y'all who provided insight, thoughtful, original comments no matter what your stance on the topic

plus this is a really long post and I don't expect everyone to read it and that's totally cool. wanted to write it for anyone who might be interested in reading it

so first, the thread title. I pay a lot of attention to the use of language because it's important. so the clarify an error a religion didn't kill these men. people did.

secondly, I wonder how many of you have substantive first hand experience with refugees, or brown peeps from the middle east?

I do. one of my best friends from back in TO is a dude who came to Canada as a refugee from Kenya. He's originally from Somalia and was there in a camp for several years.

In terms of brown peeps from the middle east all of my friends at all points in my life have been predominantly brown and black peeps. A lot of the brown peeps were first generation canadians and so visiting their homes and meeting their families yeah it was sometimes really unusual for me at first. At first.

One of my closest friend's fathers wouldn't shake my hand because he honestly believed it was wrong because his religion said so. I know he respected me immensely though and I absolutely always felt welcomed in their home.

Then before I started camming I worked security and worked with a lot of immigrants from the middle east. When we did financial zones night shifts together at some of the buildings we worked it was really boring work where not much happened so we spent long hours talking.

I made some really awesome friends there, to this day I keep in email contact with one of the dudes I worked with there. Old muslim dude from Pakistan who was in the process of sponsoring his wife and daughters here when we met. Fucking amazing human being and it's so cool to hear updates from him on what they're all up to, as a family living in TO together now

Here in northern Ontario I'm volunteering informally with a couple of families who have taken in refugee families from Syria. We all help donate to cover some of the costs and kinda befriended some of the individual members when they were first getting their bearings here. They were scared and isolated and coping with the grief of what they had been through. Plus to them everyone here was scary and new as fuck and so different.

That's natural by the way, it's not normal to feel no threat when you encounter someone very different than yourself not just in terms of appearance but in terms of cultural differences as well. As a species we wouldn't have survived without that instinct

The point is how we react. One can act to exacerbate tensions and fears or one can work to diffuse them, to reach points of commonality and mutual understanding of differences over time. It's not something that can happen overnight like the flip of a switch. But we need to rise above those instincts and realize we're not living in caves cooking our kill by firelight. We can choose to act differently now.

The vast majority of the refugees coming in from Syria aren't terrorists. Terrorists are exploiting a tool and don't care about the refugees. we in the west serve their purpose in recruiting new blood to the cause when we react with hate and fear to those who are being exploited when terrorists slip in along with them.

Now on to the religious aspect.

Isis et al. don the cape of Islam, have co-opted the muslim brand to win recruits who are muslim themselves. It's an easy recruitment tool and an extremely powerful one as well.

In Uganda Joseph Kony did the same with Christianity, warping a religion to convince peeps to join him in the commission of absolutely horrific atrocities

In North America some xian sects use religion to form cults where recruits participate in systematic sexual abuse of children

And of course the Jews killing Jesus

Shout out here to our dearly departed Relic, god bless his soul. May his crosses be burning brightly in the afterlife.

(sorry y'all couldn't resist. probably too soon I know)

back on topic

So did Christianity do this or did sick men like Kony and the north american cults twist christianity to serve their needs of power and violence and win over recruits who might not have participated otherwise?

Religion is a VERY powerful tool in manipulating people, particular vulnerable, poor people who have had little access to real education.

I wish as a planet we would stop indulging these people of all religions stripes who think some being in the sky cares about us, thinks we're special, has some awesome shit planned for us in the 'next life'. I look at it exactly the same way as I would if societies indulged peeps who thought pink elephant junkies created the world

I recognize that religion can serve some important roles for people psychologically but so can heroin. As societies we dissuade and reject that practice because it's dangerous, the risks outweigh the benefits. I see religion the same way. It's too dangerous a tool when in the hands of violent, sociopathic people who want to spread sickness and hate and destruction.

To get to that point we need to stop fighting with people who are culturally different than ourselves. We absolutely need to do that first.

We all need to do it, on every 'side'. and we're not doing it right now. This thread title alone serves a perspective that is not helpful and only drives us farther apart.

So religion didn't burn those soldiers, vulnerable people in a cult that co-opts the brand of Islam to commit atrocities did. It happened. these are the conditions we are facing as a species. we are all failing horribly in our reactions and choices in how to respond.

Apologies for the essay, just wanted to write my response to Phoenix.

Happy holidays y'all and much love to all of you. even the peeps on my ignore list =)
