Why People Use Ad Blockers

https://www.propublica.org/article/f...ows-about-them

Quote:
Facebook?s page explaining ?what influences the ads you see? says the company gets the information about its users ?from a few different sources.?

What the page doesn?t say is that those sources include detailed dossiers obtained from commercial data brokers about users? offline lives. Nor does Facebook show users any of the often remarkably detailed information it gets from those brokers.

?They are not being honest,? said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. ?Facebook is bundling a dozen different data companies to target an individual customer, and an individual should have access to that bundle as well.?
Ever see all those Facebook, Twitter and Google+ buttons on websites ...

It's funny, with people developing ad bypass I was in the camp of thinking that bypass traffic is worthless. I as a user with adblock would be upset to be shown ads.. or so I thought. Someone made a good point that made me think about it. Ad block is really for the sites that are hyper abusive. The ones where every click is a pop etc.. But on CNN or other sites where its a cube or 2 I don't mind them.

Well you are a hypocrite. You work and spend time on a webmaster board, yet you use ad block.

Nice.

The Internet is going to shit. It's become rather common to go to a page and have to watch an ad before you can see it. It's gotten really bad.

I've been a long time ad block user, to the point I almost forgot about ads being on sites. A few months ago I noticed several sites wouldn't play videos with ad block plus enabled so I ended up not reinstalling it as I'd seen several reports they were getting paid by certain groups to display ads.

I browsed the internet about 2 months with no ad blocker and finally just 2 days ago I had enough and found a replacement to ad block plus.

The simple fact is ads around the net are way to intrusive with flash overlays causing pages to load slow. There were even countless times even here on GFY that ads would drastically slow down the loading of the page. Not to mention sites that steal the back button..

Also they are extremely intrusive with how companies like google/amazon track you. You search for something and next thing you know every site you visit has a ad for that product. Mainstream sites are way worse than porn which is pretty amazing TBH.. When I first started using ad blockers it was because I ran TGP's and sometimes you would get a asshole re-directer sending you to pop-up hell.

The times have changed that now mainstream is the pop up hell, but really it's worse because they track you all over the net.

I install every single kind of adblocker possible. I also have a huge list of Ad sites resovled to 127.0.0.1 added my hosts file. Plus from time to time I disable java and take whatever information I need from a site without the bullshit of pop ups, scripts, trackers, etc.

I teach all my friends and business associates what I know. I tolerate absolutely no ads, trackers, flash cookies or anything else that I discover is stealing my bandwidth.

Ads are ok as long as they are not intrusive. People who pay for intrusive ads are just as guilty as sales reps who sell them. Here's a short lesson: Intrusive ads don't work.

There's nothing I love more than going to a site with a shit load of ads, except one with a shit load of ads and you have to click next to finish reading the article and that page is also loaded with a shit load of ads

And don't get me started on those sites with the top ten list where you have to see 10 different pages for each item in the top 10. those fuckers are also filled to the ass with ads

I think there is a certain level of "reasonable" trade between accepting some advertising and gaining useful content for free. I draw the line at intrusive ads which block my view or force me to take action as well as tracking my browsing habits.

As long as sites attempt to push this sort of advertising and tracking then I'll block them. Also I rarely even bother with sites which force you to keep clicking next to see something because they want to force ads on you.

  • Privacy is one of the main motivators.
  • Doubleclick and Facebook created a lot of the issues.
  • Adult Affiliate ads do not follow users around and collect data.
  • There are legit ads that are 'clean' that are blocked too.
  • You can thank Doubleclick and Facebook for the throwing of the baby out with the bathwater.
Bottom line is you have to monetize the web somehow. No one should be expected to work for free -- but -- there is blowback for greed.

We are releasing a JSON app soon that will evade ad blockers (for now). Good luck to the winners.

No wonder you've struggled all these years to market your camsite and software, trust me, they work incredible.

96%+ of popup ads are a waste of money.
Network ads are the lazy man's way to riches.
Buy 60K pops per day for a few months and get back with me.

Most are blocked -- not all ;)
It is a shitty way to brand, I agree ...

AdWords works but is very expensive.

Not directing this at you personally but FUCK EM ALL! Adapt or Die.

As a producer I had every Johny Come Lately tell me to adapt or die now it's their turn. They could have worked something out that benefited everyone but they arrogantly told the producers to eat shit. Now that there's very little money to be made many of those assholes are crying the blues.

Well I adapted and now they can either figure out how to themselves or they can die

Sites that block adblockers seem to be suffering

Martin Anderson Thu 21 Apr 2016 4.37pm

For news publishers the world is constantly ending ? not only in over-caffeinated headlines but behind the scenes too. It?s always been so, from Gutenberg to Wapping riots to the internet and the painful conversion from print to digital.

The latest Imminent Apocalypse is the dramatic rise in the use of adblockers ? particularly new innovations in adblocking in the coveted mobile space, even at the network level.

Some news publishers have formed a small vanguard with what many business-folks might consider the ?obvious? response: to ban or attempt to ban users who consume their content without seeing their ads ....
Serve ads from your own domain server -- that are 'tasteful' and not tracking.
The Intention Economy is real.
