Everything I learned in college no longer exists. I learned DOS and basic C++.

However, when I needed that college degree it sure came in handy. It was required to work in management at Playboy.

some good advice there but it's kinda like running a marathon with a ball and chain attached to your leg... even if you learn it all by yourself, which isn't that likely, 9 out of 10 companies will not even interview you... so you will have to jump through major hoops to get hired for any decent job... if your objective is to get a decent job, it seems easier to just go to college...

Apparently, according to research studies, those with a college degree tend to always make more than those with only a high school diploma

paid a shit ton of money for school and received my money's worth and more. glad to be done with it but don't regret a moment of the experience.

don't think it's the right choice for everyone though and degrees have little correlation to a satisfying and successful life well lived

in my humble opinion, opening poster whom I challenge to create a topic outside of an easy copy/paste spamallama link job that requires no thought on your part

I always look at it this way... Someone with a college degree was able to go a littler further and follow through, unlike someone who went to college for a quarter and then dropped out.

It's not about the letters though, or at least shouldn't be. Official designations signify only that someone can effectively navigate a bureaucracy, what each person does with their time within those programs though can be amazing.

so a big fan of advanced study for peeps who are in a place to receive what they can gain there, not so much for peeps looking for labels alone. and either way wouldn't recommend going into debt to do it

One good thing about letters though is they help when references are needed. I've been the recipient and also the provider on multiple occasions, it's still a designation of respectability which while bullshit can be worked to advantage when needed

a funny story, when I was renting my first place I was pretty young so needed a spiffy reference. asked my aunt who signed her name as First Last PhD Eng.

she ended up driving me over to sign the lease and was warmly greeted by my land lady to be as Ms Pheng

I lived there for 13 years, loved the place.

Had it been a more uppity situation the letters would have absolutely helped though

Depends on what you choose as your major. Too many choose absolutely stupid majors, that leave them with very few real world options once they graduate.

Tech schools on the whole are much better imo.

It prolongs the time, the person enters the workforce. BUT, when they finish, with great expectations of the future, there's a huge letdown, as the degree is pretty much useless.

University is grossly overpriced in the US, but a good school does not just teach a specific skill set; it teaches ways to think critically, solve problems, analyze data, etc.

I actually did pretty well at school. I wasnt a swot or a genius or anything, but learning came very easy to me. Complicated things just made sense and I just kinda seem to 'know' the answers...

I stayed on for a year, mostly because my pals did, and left with an impressive list of exam results and qualifications.

I can truthfully say that I never 'used' any of them as in I have never shown or told of my achievements or shown certificates, yet I retired happily back in 2013, aged just over 44, with no need to work again...

College / School was pointless to me.

I had a great time at college, met friends there, which are still my closest friends. Probably the best time of my life. I loved studying. So even if I could have gotten the same job and the same salary without a degree, I wouldn't miss the college.

I took digital graphic illustration in college and graduated into an economic recession in the early 90s where the first budget cut in most companies was marketing and advertising. Toronto sucked for graphic artist positions back then.
