Hurricane Irma + web hosts in Florida?

Do web hosts in Florida have a plan for the hurricanes? Isn't Mojohost's datacenter there?

If my web host was in Florida I'd be spending the day changing web hosts.

Datacenters have redundant power. Typically huge batteries and generators.

Hi Everyone,

Yes our data center is in Miami. It was purpose built to withstand hurricanes like this. If anyone would like to discuss this further, please feel free to email or message me.

Good to hear Brad, haven't had a problem with mojohost in over 3 years, and I bet services will be running fairly smoothly during all of this. Best of luck to all of your staff in florida.

My Uncle's brother and his son made a small fortune after Hurricane Andrew -- they moved to Florida just before the storm and opened up a licensed roofing contracting company. They made a bundle their first year in business.

Good luck to the winners - Irma will land fall near Miami this weekend they are saying.

I am actually based in Michigan, currently traveling in the EU for adult conferences (Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague). Not all of our staff in Miami chose to evacuate despite our best efforts, so I am just thinking of them and everyone's safety. The data center is staffed with full personnel to assist with any remote hands assistance we may require.

The real problem will become evident with the power grid failure. If you can generate your own power long enough until the grid power is back up. The other issue will be any outages in the internet fiber in and out to the datacenter. The people and servers are not going to suffer from direct hurricane wind or water damage if they can remain in the datacenter -- sleep on the floors or on the couches, have food and drinking water, etc. .

What if it goes underwater, like in Houston?

Or is it located on an elevated terrain? How long can the generators run for?

It can't. The critical infrastructure starts 30 feet above sea level. It can run indefinitely with refueling. It's on the top of FEMA's important building list in Florida.

Look up the Mojohost datacenter on google maps and you'll see for yourself the thing is pretty much reinforced compared to other buildings in the immediate area.

...I bought colo-cation.com a few years ago..

We are so thankful for our customers. Honestly, as a calculated decision we simply pay more than competitors for superior infrastructure to serve our clients better. I make less than I could but I am proud and sleep well at night.

Put me to work competing for your business! That's Mojo.

Cheers,

Brad
