I have used Ubuntu for desktops for 10 years now.
I have used RHEL (red hat enterprise LINUX -- (CentOS is the freeware clone)), Debian and Ubuntu on servers. I like Debian based distributions because of the ease of internet community support -- it's just easiest to find answers and ideas. Unlike Windows, I have never had a system go bad. I am still using my old SATA 3.0 drives from 2010. The LINUX ext 3 or 4 is a much better disc file system than DOS FAT32 or NFTS -- much more stable. If you want to use LINUX try some distros on an older computer. Mint is a good starting out distro when switching from Windows. It is Debian base like Ubuntu. I like Kubuntu the best -- the KDE plasma desktop is very professional and polished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubuntu |

Use the Ubuntu LTS (long term support) versioning it is supported for 3 years.
I have one box that updates often to the latest production release -- just so I can see the changes before I would change my LTS workstations. Servers should always the LTS if Ubuntu -- upgrading can be messy on servers. Better to just make a new server, move the files and test it prior to production -- then close the old server. |

I can see how former Windows users might like Unity -- I hate the default configuration . Unity Tweak Tool can make Unity much more usable.
KDE and Kubuntu for the win if you are using newer hardware. Xfce is 'old school' but LINUX gives you that option instead of Windows bloatware shoving pretty down your throat. That is what LINUX desktop is all about -- freedom and choice. Most software is open source and you can mess with its executable code were need be if you are able. the GTK https://www.gtk.org/ is very configurable so you can customize a lot of things user or system-wide. |

Klen install KDE Kubuntu the window buttons default to the right side and are ordered like windows - [] x
I was able to fix 12 in the settings Unity is a problem because of this. I use Mate (hate it really) 16.04 on one box -- too much effort to reformat now. Maybe when 18.04 LTS arrives ... I did fix some issues with the Unity Tweak Tool. I needed to find the file for those window buttons I fixed it on one install -- it is just plain text -- edit it in nano you are good to go. a few hours later -- grrr https://askubuntu.com/questions/1742...-right-or-left do this and wayback sudo apt update apt upgrade reboot and select metacity login I tried it and it got rid of the unity crap ![]() Much, much better so far. Konsole split vies Excellent alt+F2 run command Applications top left bar -- like the old days ... You can't make or adjust desktop panels (so far) |

On linux desktop for over 10 years.
Prefer ubuntu/gnome/backtrack/kali Does anybody even use winblows on a server? BSD/debian. Love my Pi, both OSMC and raspbian (mostly for website dev). Have quite a few around these days. Had to retire my old P4 ubuntu 10lts server a few months ago, was running 24/7 for over 7 years! (my 5 gig hdd finally died) ![]()

I have tried several different versions of Linux OS and have not been able to connect to the internet in any of them. I have a wired internet connection but for whatever the reasons are it fails to recognize it and I have even tried with each to manually configure the connection.
I am trying to put Linux on an HP Pavilion All In One 20 that is a few years old. I suspect it could be a driver problem but I do not know how to even check with Linux for drivers or how to install drivers without an internet connection. Any ideas? |

there are several places to debug how to install drivers without an internet connection. live cd , clone it from other systems , download the driver to another disk . like broadcom wireless drivers support variety of devices ...many network cards can work in linux if native driver is not exist another option https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NDISwrapper

Metacity gnome-session-flashback seems to give a real desktop performance improvement -- less eyecandy and some of the inconveniences of LINUX of the past. Buttons are on the right> now
![]() I have never had an issue with pci slot netcards and Linux -- only once with an on board network card -- was an ASUS mobo too. run $ sudo lshw|more and find the name of your net card and the model if you are having issues |

I prefer KDE on my workstations.
This Metacity gnome-session-flashback box has KDE plasma installed and I use Dolphin as the file manager. F4 instant split view terminal in Dolpin's lower half. That's the thing; you can customize the system applications mix -- or if you are sophisticated enough with code -- change the executable applications -- GUI or terminal. Or you can be part of the Winblows ecosystem and use CCleaner --and get your shit hacked ![]() |

Love Linux to death.
In fact, I wrote a guide on how to install Linux Mint as dual boot alongside pre-installed Windows 10 on a gaming laptop (combo Intel i7 GPU + dedicated NVidia GPU). I tested my guide on two out-of-the-box Asus laptops with complete success. But this method will probably work on any laptop or desktop with a similar hardware configuration having pre-installed Windows 10. How to Dual Boot Linux Mint and Windows 10 on ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 Laptop – MFC Teens This dual-boot configuration gives you the best of both worlds. Game all you like in Windows 10. And when playtime is over, boot back into Linux to do everything else. Profit.

Absolutely no disrespect to the linux users!
But, it feels like linux just makes everything a little harder for no real reason? Just my take from installing a few distros. |
