The opioid crisis just keeps getting worse, in part because new types of drugs keep finding their way onto the streets. Fentanyl, heroin's synthetic cousin, is among the worst offenders.

It's deadly because it's so much stronger than heroin, as shown by the photograph above, which was taken at the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory. On the left is a lethal dose of heroin, equivalent to about 30 milligrams; on the right is a 3-milligram dose of fentanyl, enough to kill an average-sized adult male.

Fentanyl, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and many times that of heroin.

Drugs users generally don't know when their heroin is laced with fentanyl, so when they inject their usual quantity of heroin, they can inadvertently take a deadly dose of the substance. In addition, while dealers try to include fentanyl to improve potency, their measuring equipment usually isn't fine-tuned enough to ensure they stay below the levels that could cause users to overdose. Plus, the fentanyl sold on the street is almost always made in a clandestine lab; it is less pure than the pharmaceutical version and thus its effect on the body can be more unpredictable.

Heroin and fentanyl look identical, and with drugs purchased on the street, "you don't know what you're taking," Tim Pifer, the director of the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory, told STAT in an interview. "You're injecting yourself with a loaded gun."

In 'Street Prices' which of the two amounts would cost more money? In other words would I get the same amount of heroin or Fentanyl for the same money, and just not need as much Fentanyl, or is the stronger stuff scalably more expensive?

Fentanyl is a cheap replacement for Heroin.

People hate it when they buy heroin but get Fentanyl instead. Heroin produces better and longer high and is less deadly (much lower chance to OD).

Fentanyl was designed mainly as a more potent painkiller.

That's a wrong statement. Fentanyl is very easy to synthesize and is much cheaper. Fentanyl can be manufactured for pennies, whereas Heroin requires intensive labor (farming).

That's why dealers try to cut heroin with Fentanyl or sell Fentanyl under Heroin guise.

An opioid addict would prefer Heroin over Fentanyl 100% of the time. Heroin is safer, gives better high and lasts longer. With Fentanyl you have to re-dose more often, which leads to upping the dose more often which leads to extreme withdrawals if you miss your fix.

Or would it be 10% fentanyl mixed with 90% powder to have the same total amount to fool you it is heroin?

Of course 10 times more is for deadly dose (30 mg vs 3mg), maybe for non deadly does it is not the same proportions as 10:1. Anyway stil should be at least few times different proportions.

By theway un PC way to look at that - natural selection. If you are stupid (or weakling) enough to go heroine...

chocolate: almost never, I am not a fan of sweets. Mostly only when I get it as a present.

No. There is no point in cutting coke with Fentanyl. There are much cheaper ways to cut coke - aspirin, levamisole, baking soda, etc.

Besides, Fentanyl gives completely opposite effect (sedative).

Sometimes they cut a little Fentanyl with some random shit.
Sometimes they just give you a bag of 100% fentanyl (cause it's so cheap) - that's when it's dangerous. People who don't test it and shoot up right away end up ODing.

It's much more likely for Coke to be cut with caffeine or amphetamines - it's cheaper and produces similar effects.
