Coal miners are never going back to work...
The politicians can give all the speeches they want and make promises they can't deliver.
The simple fact is coal's future is dead.. It now cost $50 to produce a megawatt of solar power. Meanwhile it costs $102 to produce that same megawatt burning coal. https://www.businessinsider.com/sola...18-5?r=US&IR=T All the coal miners living in the past will still be unemployed next year and 10 years from now if they don't get off their asses and learn a new trade. This is why Trump was trying to place tariffs on solar panels because he like other Republicans would rather waste tax payers money and cause you to pay 2 times as much for electricity than to admit they are wrong. There will never be a new coal power plant built in the US. |

We export our coal, it's the 14th largest U.S. export. Trumps goal is to export coal at high prices.
Coal power is very third world. |

The state of California is working on passing a law that makes it a requirement for all newly constructed homes to have solar panels installed.
Coal is yesterday's energy source. Trump sold people a pipe dream. |

There's about 50,000 total people in the coal industry. It would probably be cheaper to pay them all a living wage for the rest of their lives than to let the industry continue.
What's Trump's next genius plan? To put all the asbestos back into buildings?

Coal is dead. It has been for some time.
I understand that entire communities are based around coal, and their families have worked in coal mines for generations but coal is dead. Quote:
I have solar and.... I pay very little if anything. I pay $125 for the solar panels, but four or five times a year I refer someone to the solar company and they give me $500 each time someone installs with them. It's been working great for me.

This is where coal goes.
74% of the steel produced today uses coal. Metallurgical coal – or coking coal – is a vital ingredient in the steel making process. ... Steel is an alloy based primarily on iron. As iron occurs only as iron oxides in the earth's crust, the ores must be converted, or 'reduced', using carbon. In 2014, the share of world energy consumption for electricity generation by source was coal at 40.8%, natural gas at 21.6%, nuclear at 10.6%, hydro at 16.4%, other sources (solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, etc.) at 6.3% and oil at 4.3%. Coal and natural gas were the most used energy fuels for generating electricity. I live in Vancouver and we have two coal ports. All the coal goes to China. One port loaded 1 million tons in the month of December for export. They are doubling their capacity as we speak for next year. Coal will be around a long time.

Coal is so dead. It's too expensive and too dirty, and the economic case for green energy has already taken off and is growing stronger and is more profitable. And besides, most coal mining is done by machines and robots, not humans. And besides who needs this?

The issue is as each plant closes the demand goes down but the production cost of digging up coal remains the same. What this will cause is a spike in the price because the cost to dig it up is shared across less and less coal plants making the remaining plants pay more for the product until its just too expensive to produce. My guess is they are pushing coal off shore as much as they can in order to keep the price as low as they can.

Around 0.6 tonnes (600 kg) of coke produces 1 tonne (1000 kg) of steel, which means that around 770 kg of coal are used to produce 1 tonne of steel through this production route. Basic Oxygen Furnaces currently produce about 74% of the world's steel.
What part of using coal for steel don't you guys understand. Till they start making Teslas out of plastic coal will be needed to produce steel.
