Trump asks if Canada burned down the white house. LOL

History books, ya know?

Quote:
According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812.

During recent wars (like the last 200 years) Canada provided a lot of much needed metal in support.

Canada didn't exist until 1867. The British burned down the White House.

Yes it did, it was a British Colony and we were a huge part of that war. Don't let Mark's ignorance lead you astray. We only united the three territories in 1867 which is when we celebrate Canada Day for some reason, but our nation predates this and the war of 1812.

The Burning of Washington was a British invasion of Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, during the War of 1812. On August 24, 1814, after defeating the Americans at the Battle of Bladensburg, a British force led by Major General Robert Ross burned down buildings including the White House (known as the Presidential Mansion), and the Capitol, as well as other facilities of the U.S. government.[2] The attack was in part a retaliation for the recent American destruction of Port Dover in Upper Canada. Throughout the history of the United States, the United Kingdom is the only country to have ever captured Washington, D.C.; the Burning of Washington also marks the only time since the American Revolutionary War that a foreign power has captured and occupied the United States capital.

"The War of 1812 (which lasted from 1812 to 1814) was a military conflict between the United States and Great Britain. As a colony of Great Britain, Canada was swept up in the War of 1812 and was invaded a number of times by the Americans."

So maybe there were British troops from their colony of Canada? I would assume that's a pretty good possibility?

War of 1812 - The Canadian Encyclopedia

And this was a 2012 article from the Smithsonian Institute. Not sure why the title of it is what it is...
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart...use-127844144/

And this:
"To Americans, the burning of Washington by British troops was a shocking act by barbaric invaders. But the burning was payback for a similar torching by American forces the year before. After defeating British troops at York (today’s Toronto), then the capital of Upper Canada, U.S. soldiers plundered the town and burned its parliament. The British exacted revenge in Aug. 1814 when they burned the White House, Congress, and other buildings."

thank you wikipedia. but If you actually studied the history you would learn that this battle specifically was in response to the attack on port dover in upper canada, our nation. If you read further you would then learn that it was enough to round up a lot of soldiers to respond to this attack IN our nation.

If you keep reading the snippets instead of books you miss out on an actual education.

Yeah I read that as well, the article also follows up that it was a joke, one that didn't go over well but a joke. Also that the attack came from the brits who were stationed in York which later was part of Canada.

Yes it was a bad joke. But look at all the lemmings coming in and thinking he really thought that. You guys are nuts.

No he's not saying that Canada possibly burning down the White House in 2018 is a security issue. That's absurd.

CNN and MSNBC try to parse his words.

What he is plainly saying is that the U.S. steel industry is crucial to national security. Canadian steel has helped put our steel industry in decline. That's one of the reasons Trump flipped Pennsylvania and won the Presidency. The people there are tired of being screwed over by trade deals that hurt our own citizens.

What Trump is saying is that it is crucial for our country to be self-reliant on U.S. steel and have a vibrant steel industry here in case of crisis or war or both.

Means our steel workers go back to work. Better for our economy long term.

Now you can agree or disagree with Trump that having our own steel industry kicking ass is a good thing. But the media tries to pretend that Trump is "attacking" our allies.
It's fucking stupid. He is not "attacking" anyone. He is HELPING our own citizens and our own economy.
The same way that Canada helps it's own citizens and it's own economy.

You are correct. Our history is a bit confusing as it is mostly taught incorrectly in our schools as a matter of simplifying things. But essentially our nation was formed LONG before 1867. July 1st was only our confederation. Our union between upper, lower canada along with british columbia. Technically we didn't separate from our dependence on the UK until 1982.

Robbie, the DOD report states that the risk to National security via the steel industry is from

“Chinese overproduction and … their attempts to circumvent existing antidumping tariffs.” Not at all Canada.

https://www.commerce.gov/sites/comme...am=top-stories

Also, the dept of Commerce tried very hard to find a link between National Security and the Steel Industry and found none.

"It was tasked with conducting an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1962. Other than a facile argument that simply equates a strong domestic steel industry with national security, the Commerce Department report did not offer any insight into how the two were linked."

https://www.commerce.gov/news/press-...s-coordination

Trump's wrong to wrongly accuse CA of being a threat to National Security.

Wait, what? When did CNN or MSNBC say that Trump is afraid Canada will burn down the White House?

Except this is ridiculous. Remember, when he imposed the initial sanctions in March, he EXEMPTED Canada (and Mexico). If he really thought Canada hurt the US steel industry, why except Canada?

I get that Trump wants to make more steel, and make the US more of an exporter of goods. That's great. The stupid trade war though is just the wrong way to do it. His movie, plus Canada's retaliation, is going to raise prices for everyone over time.

It's also completely stupid for Trump to call Canada a threat. Canadian steel is used in US Fighter Jets for fucksakes.

What Trump wants is fine. What he says and does to get what he wants is insane.

Totally fine idea. And maybe not just steel but lots of other products too. Totally, totally fine. All countries should be self reliant where possible.

But the words.... the arrogance... the slaps in the face to his next-door neighbour and major trade partner... Seriously, What the Fuck, Donald Trump? What the fuck....

Hold up. Try not to say "The Media", because "The Media" includes just about every news outlet and blog and everything. Instead, be more specific.

When I google "trump attacking canada", look what I see:

You can see that only 2 of the media outlets use inflammatory language. For both you and I to become better versed on the subject, I think it is best that we both call-out specific media outlets that do this kind of thing. Let's get detailed, and critical.

The same way that Canada helps it's own citizens and it's own economy.
Agreed! Time for a Libby-Republican Hug guaranteed to break GFY.

Folks, his aim is China dumping steel. China has too much capacity and is selling it below cost. How much of an issue is that for the US? We get cheap steel. Lots of companies think that is a good thing.

Trump slaps tarrifs on Canada so that Canada will slap tarrifs on the U.S and whatever is tariffed China will sell cheeper to Canada & the U.S. taking over trade for that item.

Tariffs help China

FTR, I'm pro removing tariffs.

We can also see by this chart CA tariffs are stifling their economy. Why can't trump use current CA tariffs in this way as a bargaining chip instead of making up fake CA attacks to justify CA a National security threat when it is not.

Help CA help themselves. Maybe then they won't need to stink up the planet with all their sand oil.

here's how dumb the left is. Hannity tells Mueller probe witnesses to do exactly what Hilary Clinton did and liberals go batshit crazy all of the internet calling it crime after crime after crime.

of course you tards and the MSM in general will quietly ignore.... this genius comedic move

A Nice Video on Reality vs The Left

I completely forgot about the embarrassingly bad and negative shit Obama was saying about trade and the economy.

What a foolish minion you are.

Trump supporters are a monolithic voting block, the "left" and the "right" are not. Grow up.

"They are everything that we aren't" followed by "grow up"
LOL

20 years of research and hundreds of thousands of surveys across the globe/cultures and socioeconomic classes has proven with 100% certainty by moral psychologist Jonathan Haidt that US Conservatives are far more balanced and well reasoned in their views than US Liberals.

Bad news for you.

Well, not bad news for you, the insane person. But at least we all recognize it as bad news for you, where you likely just read the above as nothing more than "hate, mean, bitter, racist, hate, racist, divide, hate, trump, hate, racist, xenophobe" because you're an insane simpleton.

not that you'd ever read hard science that challenges everything you believe but.... here's a book written by a liberal professor, moral psychologist and researcher that explains what a dipshit you are. not because that was his goal or objective, but because thats simply where the data lead.
