If you read further you would then learn that it was enough to round up a lot of soldiers to respond to this attack IN our nation.

You are correct. Our history is a bit confusing as it is mostly taught incorrectly in our schools as a matter of simplifying things. But essentially our nation was formed LONG before 1867. July 1st was only our confederation. Our union between upper, lower canada along with british columbia. Technically we didn't separate from our dependence on the UK until 1982.
