Washington, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The Army of the United States suspended, at least temporarily, the layoffs of recruits of foreign origin who joined the armed forces due to the possibility of becoming US citizens, local media reported today.

According to the Associated Press (AP), a memorandum dated on July 20 details the orders given to high-ranking officers to stop processing the layoffs of those people immediately.

Early last month, the Department of Defense said that no specific changes had been made in its policy in that regard, and that the verifications of criminal records will continue.

At the time, AP reported that immigration lawyers had noted that they knew more than 40 women and men who had been deactivated or whose status had become questionable, thus risking their future.

Several soldiers said at the time that they had not been notified about the reasons of their discharge and others noted that they were considered security risks because they had relatives abroad or the Pentagon had not completed the review of their priors. Due to the litigation, military spokespersons pointed out that they could neither explain the situation nor answer questions about whether policy changes had been made in some armed corps.

Eligible immigrants are asked to have a legal status in the United States, like a student visa, to be able to enroll in the military, the source added.

It pointed out that more than 5,000 of those people joined the special program in 2016 and some 10,000 are serving in the military at present, mainly in the Army.
