this is a sailboat and those are sails

Danish giant Maersk Tankers said Thursday it has installed 100-foot-tall rotating cylinders on one of its product tankers, adding devices that are effectively high-tech sails that could cut the vessel’s fuel bill by up to 10%. If the system proves out during testing, Maersk could use the technology on dozens of ships in its 164-tanker fleet.

The WSJ notes that Maersk spends over $3 billion on fuel a year, so a 10 percent reduction fleet-wide could result in massive savings, more than enough to cover the cost of up to €2 million of installing rotor-sails on a ship.

Wow. 3 Billion a year on fuel.
Could they not install solar on the ships. Looks like they have plenty of space.

It is amazing that they can harness power from the magnus effect like that...who would have thought that it could put out that much energy...

jacques was a true pioneer and a childhood hero of mine. I recently dived in (get it) and rewatched a bunch of his documentaries recently. I loved the fact he's smoking a cigar much of the time, he would be cast out today i bet.

Fun story.. my uncle who is dead now, treasure hunted as a hobby.. (hobby to him was being buddies with guys like Mel Fisher and those sorts.). one day he calls my aunt and tells her to cook something good for dinner that he was brining a guest home..

The guest was jacques cousteau.....

Btw... I assume if you liked s jacques cousteau as a kid that you've seen the movie "life aquatic". Its a cult classic comedy that was sort of a play on jacques cousteau's adventures staring Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and Owin Wilson.

Its a pretty cool cult classic.. was definitely aimed at 80s kids. Honestly with the actors that are in it, Im sort of amazed it wasnt more popular.. Its one of those movies I can watch anytime I see it on tv and never get tired of it.

Honestly, I had forgotten about it untill I saw this topic and it reminded me of the Alcyone. I always wondered why it was never used by anyone else. It was supposed to be the next big thing but seemed to go the way of flying cars...
