Question(s) for members from Seattle, Las Vegas, and San Francisco
For those of you that have lived for an extended period of time in, or within 1 hour of Seattle, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, I would appreciate your personal input.
We are considering our next move to one or more of the aforementioned cities or communities within a reasonable distance. What cities and neighborhoods offer the best bang for your buck? Factors include: housing affordability, taxes, office space rent, general quality of life, ease of commuting 1-2x weekly to the downtown/civic center of the major cities nearby. Thanks in advance. Housing prices in Las Vegas are increasing. If you are going to move, you need to move now.

I live in Portland now and lived in Seattle for a few years in the early 1990's so I'm a little out of the loop but I can tell you a few things about Seattle.
1. When I lived there I lived right downtown. Don't do that. It is expensive and if you own a car it is a pain to find parking. If I were to move there again I would likely move more out in the suburbs where it is more affordable, however, I know housing costs are rising fast everywhere in the area. 2. Taxes. There is no state income tax which is nice, but there is a sales tax and there are a ton of other small local taxes and individual taxes on items that more than make up for the lack of a state income tax. All that said, the taxes are still going to be less than San Fran because they have all of that plus a state income tax. 3. Driving. Traffic in Seattle is horrible. Rush hour downtown is just as bad as it is in places like Los Angeles. If it were me and I was setting up an office and a separate place to live, I would do a lot of homework as to what the commute will be like because if you live in the suburbs and need to commute into downtown during rush hour, you are going to be pulling your hair out. 4. Fun. The negative stuff aside, Seattle is a great place to live. If you like sports they have plenty of pro and college sports in the area. The music scene is great as is the art scene. They have a couple of great film festivals and every year they have a big art/music festival called Bumbershoot. There is a ton of great outdoor stuff to do. You are only a few hours away from Canada and the food scene is crazy good. Weed is also legal, if you are into that. |

You can count San Francisco out. Housing costs here are insane.

Don't move to Vegas, especially the Summerlin area. I don't want to be near you. I was here first, so you can move to Seattle or something.
And stay out of San Antonio don't want you close to my other house either. |

Good to know that I can find both of them in Summerlin. ![]() ![]() Richard, Kane, Tampa Toker and Ray ... thanks for the comments. Personal feedback on specific areas and concerns is always appreciated. Tampa Toker, I think we've met before in Hollywood FL and Vegas many moons ago. So you moved permanently to Vegas?

Seattle is nice but housing anywhere near the city is expensive as fuck. 3000sq ft home next to me sold for 1.2 million within one week. We are 30 minutes from down town.

Pretty much the entire Seattle area including Tacoma, Federal Way, Bellevue etc is expensive and the I-5 is usually one big parking lot.
If you don't mind the desert and around a 4hr drive over to Seattle, there's always the east side of the state. Yakima, Spokane, Tri-Cities are fairly big. Though driving over the passes in the winter can be pretty dangerous or non existent if they close them. |
