They claim they made just $22k last year. If before expenses, the sites are tiny. Twenty-one years and not well known and twenty-eight times the number of emails against actual signups. Sounds like no one checked logins versus signups. $400/week is not small but good paysites earn that per day, not per year. Thirteen signups at $29.95 less credit card fees or fifteen signups per day gets you $400/day. Amateur is popular and if advertised right, could easily do that volume.

Old software, bad security and poor knowledge equals easy hack.

I had a script that’d email me expired nicks. Weekly I’d check logins then run a script to compare logins versus current members. I’d run a script to check for different IPs logging in under a username and temporarily ban that name. I’d run these under all my paysites on a timer so that it checked every twelve hours. If three IPs got in under one username, it deleted it. AOL users had it rough back then.

I got into IRC to get botnet information and IPs. Like VPNs, different IPs could login under one username. I’d hate to think how many security scripts paysites run to stay in business. I used to sit invisible in #password channels and log them, then strip the usernames and passwords and sites and email site owners. Most were thankful but a few thought it was a scam and told me to fuck off! I told them to simply check username login IPs in the main email, but some people......

Twenty-five years ago hacks were common. Software and scripts helped but webmaster knowledge was vital. Hackers bragged on Usenet how they got in. It helped us secure our sites better.

People claim they can’t be hacked. Years ago a guy on here ran a service. Pay him $500 and he’d hack your site then tell you how to secure it. If he couldn’t get in, he’d pay YOU $500 for information on what you used to block hackers. The contract was about hacking “into your site through an insecure setup or an exploit” so we called it even. He did get in but not by hacking my sites. He hacked one of the host’s boxes, got info on my box, then logged in. I argued he didn’t hack ME or my SITE, he simply got the login. Yeah, he hacked the server to get it, but not ME. I promised not to tell anyone since many “hacks” were the same thing. He was up in Canada and eventually arrested on hacking and cracking into the White House and major corporations. Five years in jail only but restitution of millions plus must educate on how he hacked.

That brings back memories..... y’all should do that again. Run a contest for cash and get someone to try to hack their way into paysites. Pay per site or unlimited sites. Get someone trustworthy to maintain the information and cash. People can then buy the information on how it was hacked or what is open. A smart webmaster will pay $500 for info to secure their sites. Donations for the idea so our industry can be better protected ($5-$20) can be made to PayPal.... to my $000 account;)

A team of coders, hackers, webmasters, writers (I volunteer) and bookkeepers (I volunteer) is needed plus a few leaders/coordinators.

Laugh— but we need to help each other. Being exploited isn’t funny.
