PHP Version
For those of you that run Linux/Apache and code with PHP/MySQL what version are you using? I've been making a lot of optimization changes to get the most out of my server and I've seen opinions on 5.6 vs 7+, but 7 requires a lot. Especially if your coming from an outdated version.
I'm testing with the multi php feature and seeing if I can truely see a difference, but just wanted to know if anyone has some advice on this. |

The porn industry is specific - we use alot of things like trade scripts that haven't been updated in years. If you are coding for porn, then it's best to code for 5.6, and maintain compatibility but not REQUIRE php 7

Be careful with using cutting edge php version. I've seen ioncube cause 7.x to segfault completely.

Most scripts for adult haven't been maintained for some time and PHP 5.6 is the safe bet. However if you're running Wordpress or anything modern, even Mechbunny, you can use PHP 7 safely. |

![]() P.S. The CyberSEO 7 plugin is fully compatible with both PHP 5.6 and PHP 7+ on all levels.

PHP is moving forward and developers don't want to be left behind.
Expecting developers to hang around to work on antiquated code is a bad idea. Failure of porn sites to use php7 is why developers need to exit porn for good. Porn biz is slow, so developers have to build mainstream modern code; not ancient code. Sticking with php5+ is only going to make a half dead porn industry even more dead. ![]()

Well, what is interesting , i saw on one benchmark how php 5.6 is much faster for some reason then php 7, so maybe better to hold up. But again, it could also depend which functions are used.

Everything I develop for myself is bleeding edge PHP 7.3
Scripts I update for the open source community will all be PHP 7.1 PHP 5.6 is end of life, in fact anything below 7.1 is end of life. PHP: Supported Versions |

It's faster - yes - but in real world applications doesn't come out like that. PHP7 won't speed up mysql queries.

When it comes to speed there are a lot of variables that make a much bigger impact..
Efficient queries, compression, CDN, etc. Hell even just compressing your design images and making more use of CSS will make a big impact on speed. I have a duplicate dev build that I'm upgrading to 7+ and that will help me really see just how much of a difference it will make. But they have changed the sql libraries and so much that in some cases I have to completely re-write entire modules. But yeah.. Staying relevant is important. I've got a buddy that has a job maintaining existing programs written in cobol. He's been doing it so long that he's not up to date at all with anything else. So as a programmer you can see how that would be a problem if he lost that job. Most good developers stay on top of the latest tech. |
