There has been a hell of a lot more going on in places like Queens, Brooklyn, and Harlem than just tax breaks. There has been massive investment into those areas.

I originally thought the same thing too. Then I thought about it. I don't think we are looking at the bigger picture.

Amazon doesn't come to a town and set up shop, and the city, county, and state benefits. In fact, just the opposite. Instead, Amazon comes to a town and negotiates to get them the best possible tax deal. Amazon strong arms them and ends paying little to no taxes. At the same time the city has to pay to maintain the infrastructure, police, fire, etc... When a single business has 25k employees, the police department has to devote more time, manpower, and resources to that location... Which they are not being paid for. At the same time, these 25k are ripping up the roads which have to be maintained which aren't being paid for by Amazon.... If a pipe breaks and floods the street, Amazon doesn't pay to repair it - the city does. And if the city isn't getting any taxes from Amazon.... This can end up costing the city, county, and state tens of millions of dollars every year with very little benefit.

Even worse is the way Amazon does this. They don't negotiate so much as they strong arm, and they do it in private without citizen input. In this case, the government gave Amazon everything it wanted and got nothing in return the citizens are like "what just happened" and "why didn't we have any input in it".

We have a casino here in town and from what I understand they tried to strong arm us. The local city government stood up and said no to them. They said "go build somewhere else" knowing that they had to build on this land because it was Indian land. They built us a new fire station, bought us new fire trucks, and paid their taxes like a good local business.

25k jobs @ 150k is a lot of money staying in the local area. It also sends a message to other big companies to not set up in NY. As mentioned before in this thread it would be awesome if Amazon went into Detroit or Flint and really benefited a city for the tax breaks they are looking for.

But it doesn't go into the "local area". It goes elsewhere.

In this case, we are talking about NYC. How many of these employees will live in NYC? More than half of the people who work in NYC do not live in NYC. Amazon isn't going to pay any taxes in NYC or even NY. More of than half of the employees will live outside of NYC; Most of those will live in NJ and will pay taxes there.

Also, it does not send a message to other businesses not to come to NY or NYC. I am sure NY and NYC welcomes new businesses. However, it does send a message saying "Don't come here and expect us let you get away with murder".

I'm sorry, but Amazon is making billions in profit and not paying ANY taxes.

I wouldn't want Amazon to come to my hometown. I couldn't imagine it. Amazon would set up shop here in town and not pay ANY taxes to my city government? Having 25k employees would require huge increases in police, fire, and other city employees.... It would mean a net loss to the city government and county government.

San Jose - not to far from me - pitched Amazon but offered no tax incentives: https://www.npr.org/2019/02/15/69515...ntives-for-you

I'm sorry, but businesses shouldn't be going to our government and demanding huge tax concessions.

This the new Left today.

Burn everything to the ground to prove you're right.

Some of you fucking idiots are literally arguing against a company that's bringing 25,000 high paying jobs into an economy.... and you still can't figure out why we have such strong job growth.

Holy shit.

Clueless idiot.

Lowering the taxes by 3 billion doesn't change the scenario. Bringing in 25,000 jobs (with an average salary of 150k) and revitalizing an area brings in much more than 3 billion.

But this is why the usual idiots post here. This is like the trailer park of the industry.
giving tax breaks to the richest man in the world is good business only for idiots like you...what about the millions and millions of businesses that are NOT bezos? oh right...fuck them...give the richest man in the world an unfair economic advantage so that he can kill off even more non-amazon jobs...

NY was right in telling bezos to fuck off and protecting the 99.9999999999% of all people who are not bezos who pay taxes...

This thread is hilarious - right wingers angry that Jeff "I Hate Trump" Bezos was one-upped. You do realize he hates Trump more than Bladewire?

People who have never been to New York city or outside of Manhattan claiming they understand what is best for the city. Bitch NYC has the MOST inbound tourist arrivals in the Americas and is the HIGHEST tourism revenue recipient in the world. Yeah, more people visit Macau, but those are Chinese people who spend 1/3 (really) what Americans do. NYC will be fine without a piddly ass factory of minimum slave wagers. 25,000 JOBS!!!!!!11!!11 those are Amazon jobs so maybe 500 real jobs.

Libertarians, you do realize tax breaks are not your laissez-faire capitalism, right?

Socialists - what the hell are even doing on here - we are talking about jobs, your skin should be burning. Don't you have a novel to read about a country that never existed?

This is a minor blip for NYC. Fuck Jeff Bezos.
