Scientists Explain Sexual Identity, LGBTQ, Asexual, And More

Language constantly evolves along with the facets of identity in society. And just recently, social experts have rounded up the terms associated with sexual orientation, including the “Q” in LGBTQ and other terms that describe genders.

Scientists have offically provided definitions of sexual identities in society, as first reported by CNN. Since June is Pride Month, there’s no better time to learn about the different gender and sexuality terms. Check out how experts have defined all of the below.

Sex - The scientific community refers to sex as distinct from gender. The former is assigned to a person by birth and involves physical and biological characteristics. In some states, however, there is a third sex known as intersex.

Intersex - This describes people born with sex chromosomes, external genitalia or an internal reproductive system that deviates from the standard male or female sex. Generally, it is the parents and the physicians who categorize the sex of a person upon birth, resulting in surgery or hormonal treatment. Intersex individuals oppose the manner of choosing one’s sex as they urge them to consider a person’s sense of gender or sexual identity.

Gender – This refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors and characteristics that serve as cultural indicators of how a person socially identifies himself or herself. The standard classifications of gender are male and female, but, as society evolves, gender is considered as a spectrum and not merely binary.

Gender Identity - As per NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, a person’s emotional and psychological sense of his or her gender may not correspond to the sex assigned to them at birth. At present, there are already several terms for people who do not consider themselves as male or female.

Lesbian – Lesbians are women attracted to other females. Some ladies, however, prefer to be called queer. They are cisgenders, in a sense, since they conform to their female sexuality. Their attraction, however, deviates from the general belief that standard women are only attracted to the opposite sex.
