This is the new norm. Fires get out of control and there is little we can do to stop them. I read that one of the fires yesterday went from a small fire to four thousand acres in an hour.

While California is no longer in a drought, the truth is it just rarely rains here. I honestly cannot remember the last time it rained.

Even worse is that the power company is shutting down power. I live in Northern California, right on the edge of civilization.... Just outside of town is "country". They are shutting down power and everyone who lives in the country area went without power for three days the week before last. Seems they are doing it again. My house is inside of the shut off zone provided by the power company, but so far they haven't shut off power at my house. This cannot be the new norm - shutting down power every other week for three days. People are fucking furious.

I have solar, but it's hooked up to the power company... If my power gets shut down my solar... goes to waste. I need to have some kind of a switch so that it the solar power gets re-routed directly to my house.

I lived in the country for 8 years outside LA. One fire burned down the cell towers didn't have cell service for a month while they rebuilt the towers..other than the caretaker for the towers who lived about 100 yards away the closest house was about 2 miles.

I lived at the end of a 2 mile private dirt road.

I was totally of the grid. Water from a well and everybody had solar and generators. I had electric because I was tapped into the communication towers...

I was sleeping outside on a deck over looking the ocean with my dog. Pretty fucking awesome

The reason we couldn't get out when the evacuation order was broadcast the road was on fire and nobody could get through. They sent a fire truck but no luck, we had to wait for daylight to get air lifted

Get a generator, they are pretty cheap relatively speaking these days

Are you having second thoughts about loving where you live and not living anywhere else?
