Disney Plus

(kind of strange to be talking about Disney on an adult board but I know many of us are Marvel / Star Wars fans....)

Disney Plus launched yesterday and I wasn't too happy about it. All of these companies are putting their "content" behind their own paywalls and we have to pay "extra" for it... For example, I have Hulu and pay for Hulu every months so I can stream TV, but CBS has Star Trek in their online system only and I cannot watch it unless I pay for it so.... I am just going without. I pay for Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime... I am not paying also for CBS and Disney, etc....

Turns out Verizon has a deal where you get Disney Plus for a year for free so... I have Disney Plus. I watched "The Mandalorian" - pretty cool to have a Star Wars tv show - and thought it was great. I have most of Star Wars and Marvel on DVD so other than The Mandalorian Disney Plus isn't worth much to me. However, my kid is nineteen and loves all of the old Disney crap so.... We'll see.

Thoughts?

This thread could turn quite comical if it turns into a "I hate paying for content!" chant.

To qualify for the free year, you have to be on a Verizon unlimited plan. Not a bad deal.

I also purchased Disney+ yesterday. They're off to an ok start. They need to add more content. Most of it is fluff. The Mandalorian is pretty good though.

I don't mind paying for content - not at all. Since cable TV was invented I have been paying for television, and I never complained. If you think about it, it's a bit absurd - I have to pay to watch cable tv AND I have to watch ads.

Now... they want me to pay $50 a month for TV... But if I want to watch Star Trek I have to pay an extra $10? And if I want to watch The Mandalorian it's an extra $6? I love John Oliver so... I have to pay extra for HBO too? Add in Netflix and Amazon Prime and.... It's starting to add up.

This is the music industry all over again. I'll use Taylor Swift as an example. My family were huge Taylor Swift fans, but she only sold her her music or streamed her music over Apple products. I didn't use Apple so... No Taylor Swift for me. This was a problem with a lot of artists - I couldn't listen to a lot of music because they were on a different platform. Eventually they figured it out.... A lot of Taylor Swift fans couldn't listen to her music and she was missing out on sales. Now... Taylor Swift and is ALL music platforms. It's going to be the same with TV and movies. Eventually you will sign up for one and all of the TV shows and movies will be there.

Content on a shelf doesn't make anyone money. If people are willing to pay for your content and can't, you are losing money. CBS will figure it out eventually. I'm sorry, but I am not paying $10/month or whatever it is so I can I watch Star Trek.

I used Disney+ in Japan before it was released in USA and don't like it. Interface sucks. Basically a Netflix clone, but clunkier and feels really barren. Also was very buggy (constantly being logged out). Content sounds great at first, but you'll soon grow bored watching the same movies. They may have some new exclusives and series, but don't do a good job of pushing them within the app (Amazon Fire). $8 is a fair price and any more and people would start canceling after a few months.

And this ladies and gentleman is why sites like Pornhub won out.

Why would I pay $25/mo to see one porn star on one site, $25/mo for another pornstar on another site, when I can just get Pornhub Premium and see all of them there, and then the rest will come along as soon as they realize that they are leaving money on the table.

I disagree. It's a completely different business model.

In the past we paid $100 for television and we got to see everything. Now they want me to pay an EXTRA $10/month to watch Star Trek AND an EXTRA $10/month to watch John Oliver. I am paying for the content, and the company that produced the content is getting paid money.

Watched The Mandalorian yesterday and I liked it a lot. It was just a first episode of course and I can't predict the future, but I hope it will be a good 8-episode show.

I agree. I'm happy to pay for content. Easy access, not worrying about breaking the law or getting virusses, ... I would pay up to 50 dollar / month for a service that brings me good content. But then it has to bring me ALL the content, not 10 dollar here, 6 dollar there, ...

I hope one company will arise that bundles all these streaming services into 1, for one price and yes, I would be willing to pay a premium for that. But not the total sum of all fees for all those services.

Let the haters hate

I stream and Torrent everything that's decent out there.

Right now 'See' from the Apple TV platform is EPIC - starring that Aqua man dude.

December 7th I might go and watch the Boxing at the pub.

Treadstone and the Purge and The Walking Dead is good.

Seven Worlds One Planet is EPIC aswell.

Always download around the 4Gig mark 1080p.

Within a few years you'll be paying $100 again, except to 10 different service providers at $10 each. People tend to forget that the funding required to produce high quality content doesn't just magically fall from the sky.

I didn't pay extra for the music; I had one service and one service only. If I couldn't listen to one artist... I went without - and they lost money.

Same thing with television and movies. I love Star Trek and Star Wars, but I can live without watching the new Star Trek on CBS. I am already paying to watch CBS but I am not paying MORE to watch one show. Sorry, pass. It's just not worth $120/year to watch ONE tv show.

My point was you'll stop paying for the mostly useless bundled TV channels you're paying for now and will instead reallocate that amount to smaller platform subscriptions. Also, you're not paying for just one show, but rather for a handful, a dozen or a few dozen of their productions you like. Then eventually consolidation will (should) occur and round and round we go...the market's still definitely in its storming and forming phases.

They also need to sort out the licensing madness because if you live outside of (US,UK,AU,CA), pirating is your only option to watch certain shows.

Personally I just stick with Netflix and YouTube, after that I'm probably spending way too much time and would rather get back to work out outdoor activities.

The ONLY reason I would sign up for CBS Access is to see Star Trek. I am already paying money to see shows produced by CBS; I am not paying $120/year more to see ONE show.

It's not going to happen.
