Are all SATA cables created equal?

I'm getting a 4TB Samsung EVO SSD in a few days time. I have a sata cable on my desk - It says on it:

Quote:
2725 E314998 *SOME-KIND-OF-SYMBOL* AWM 80C 30V VW-1 Serial ATA 26AWG DERONXIN
Thing Is, I know its a good few years old, but never been used. Dont wanna buy another if not needed. Is this OK, or out of date?

Ahh OK all cool. I found out - Its NOT. Its the old version, before the fast standards came in. The one that WOULD have worked is one that says

Quote:
2725 E314998 AWM 80C 30V VW-1 Serial ATA 264WG DERONXIN-T 6Gbps/3Gbps
I'll just steal a new one - So, never mind

POOOOOO!!!!!!!

considering 400gbps can travel down a hair thin glass wire, youŽd have thought by now, sata, usb, all of these cables would be of similar spec...

consumer and industrial huh

SATA 3.0 was released in like 2009, everything after that is 6gbit capacity. Unless your sata cable is like 15 years old, there is no faster cable available.

TBF, it's a very old, very cheap cable. Someone did some work for me back in about 09, and sent it to me on a small capacity 3.5 sata hdd. At the time, I only had an iMac and two laptops, so I had no way to access the drive. I commented to him that I couldn't plug it in, and I'm not sure if he understood me correctly, because that sata cable arrived in the post a few days later.

I got the stuff off the drive using a pals PC, but never ever used the cable. Its just been sat in a drawer ever since. However, considering a brand new one is less than a fiver, where I thought it would be about 20+ I have no problem just grabbing a new one.

Plus its bright blue and I would rather use a black one anyway, in line with the aesthetic of my PC

Consider the M.2 NVMe version of the SSD, with PCIe adapter. Fits into a X16 slot, and it's faster than SATA.

Hmm, not sure that you can get 4TB in the M.2 NVMe form.

That's a pretty decent size and I'd imagine a decent amount of cash, any particular reason you need to access 4TB of data at blinding speed? I'd be worried about reliability for such a large SSD.

Just games tbh - Cunt be fucked with the load times. Nothing mission critical. Good idea about the M.2 but like you say, 4GB isn't gonna be realistic in that form. My OS however is on a 500GB Samsung M.2 so all is good

I know its overkill, but I'm just future proofing - For example I've got another 16gb of DDR4 ram coming too. I've got 16 already which is more than enough for any of today's games, but it will save me having to find a matching pair of sticks in say 3 years time, when 16GB is no longer enough for games...
