AMD Ryzen 64 core processor for you video rendering folk

Just announced...

It'll be interesting to see how this affects video rendering time. Gonna need to float an iceberg into your PC to cool it, tho.

Just in time, too. The wife and I are lookin' at buildin' a monster gaming system in the new year.

It will be great for rendering. But for gaming, no games use that many cores?

Well saves having rooms full of computers had some massive power bills due to rendering with slow computers and flatmates that were into Bryce 3dmax etc with pentium II etc.

This thing sounds like a render farm in a box.

I'm not a gamer or a video editor so I don't know about this stuff - I thought it was all about the video card?..

I do have fun starting MASSIVE Google Cloud machines for a few hours and seeing how fast I can run shit - I need another hobby.....

It kinda is, but let me try and explain it as best I understand it. Your graphics card is your graphics card, and it does what you expect when you ask it to do it. A fast processor helps, but it only sends one job / request / (thread) at a time. A duel core can send two jobs / requests / (threads) at a time. Quad core sends 4 etc... a 64 Core can send 64 jobs / requests / (threads) to the graphics card at the same time. So, theoretically, 64 times faster.

OMG I get it! - The relationship between CPU and GPU is seriously something I have wondered about many times - Google is no help at all - You are officially better than Google!..

EDIT: To be fair I am easily distracted by the first shiny advert and forget what I was asking.....

Well bear in mind that I'm really over simplifying it. Its not gonna be literally 64 times faster, but a lot faster than it is atm, if you get me

Yes, the core clock speed matters too. A mainstream CPU like the Ryzen 3900X may advertise 4.6 GHz, but thats only in 1 core scenario. When using all 12 cores, its typically 4.2 GHz on each core when the task is maxed out. Thats why the Intel CPUs still are better in software using only 1 core or few. But it stops there. The new AMD CPUs support higher RAM frequencies and support pcie 4.0. And taking price and power consumption into consideration, AMD is the new king if you want a setup for both gaming and video creations.
