Unfunny

ok, i think i'm gonna go a little deep on this, so read slowly. (if you care)

unfunny

adj : not funny; especially failing to achieve the intended humor; "a very unfunny joke"

It's a weird concept. According to the definition, it means it's failing to be funny. So you have to be actually trying to be funny and not making anyone laugh.

So is there such thing as 'trying to be unfunny'? Maybe our mind is pre-determined not to accept such thing. Why would anyone try to fail to be funny? I think there was just an 'aha!' moment in my head and I kinda grasped this concept within a sec.

And only two examples comes to my mind (it seems to be not such a common thing):

- The AT&T 'collect call' commercial with the carrot head guy. The jokes are extremely unfunny. If you have seen those, you know what I mean. But why would such a big company invest in these stupid commercials? Obviously it works! Now they are actually 'trying to be unfunny' in those commercials.
- (this one is kind of a theory) And I think the second example is Luc Duboi (aka. Luclonely, sexygoat etc..). He is not funny, and he looks like he is trying to be funny. But.... He actually is trying to be unfunny on purpose, and that's why he exists.

That being said, I wonder if there would be such thing as 'trying to be unfunny and failing to do so'. But I think it's a new concept and the examples are rare, so failing is not much of an issue. You can't really compare who fails and who doesn't. So it's not too hard to be unfunny and keep doing it without failing on that purpose (just like ATT keeping on producing new series of that commercial). I think there really is some effectiveness behind all this.

What i just wrote was something barely anyone would have thought about, and not many people would understand when told to. It's also hard to put in words.

So you may just read this thread, go ahead and tell me 'Who the fuck cares?', because you would think that I was trying to post something interesting but it failed to be so. But maybe in fact, I am actually trying be uninteresting
