Todays complaint about Americans
What the heck is a quart?
I am listening to youtube vids on how much oil I should buy for my moped, and the Americans talk about getting quarts. They look at you daft when you go to the shop and ask for oil in quarts in the UK. Why can you just not use liter like normal people.

a quart is 4 cups or 2 pints or 32 ounces
a liter is 33.8 ounces so a quart is just a bit smaller than a liter .

It's part of the metric system vs. the imperial system.
The metric system is the most used measurement system in the world. Only three countries in the world don't use the metric system: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. Every other country around the world uses the metric system. Right now United States hasn't changed to metric officially because of time - money plus education. https://opentextbc.ca/basickitchenan...f-measurement/

Just so you know.
The Imperial measurement system was first developed in Britain in the 1800's and replaced the Winchester standards which had been in place since the late 1500's. The Middle Ages provided the background for development of the British System. https://opentextbc.ca/mathfortrades2...-and-imperial/

Check out Yankee Doodle Dandy here.
Quite fancying a quaff of the old beverage the other day, I frequented a ye olde "Britishe Pube", relishing the thought of a traditional foaming, nut-brown ice-cool 40 degree imperial pint. (This is either a joke about British beer, or American measurements, you decide.) "Good eve, stout yeoman of the bar," I said heartily. "A flagon of your finest tipple, preferably in good old British imperial 551 ml or 473 ml pint fashion, if you please, squire". He said, "This is Noo Yawk, bud. And it's 11:30am, not evening. And a British imperial pint is 568 ml, not 551 ml or 473 ml, which are American pints, for reasons I don't know, probably King George, Google it. And by the way, Sir, this is a Wendy's." It wasn't a Wendy's, it was a chop shop, but I have to admit that was a good one, especially as they were very large 6 ft tall gentlemen unloading one kilo bricks of heroin, and looked like they knew their way around a 12 inch monkey wrench or 9mm Beretta. TL;DR: gun nuts and drug dealers (and NASA) use metric in the US, and nobody measures their pizzas in centimeters

Well all I can say is that American's are an amazing group of people that due to it's size is very diverse not only in language and culture but also in education. Sadly some students fall behind or drop out missing higher education. In talking about Metrics - this seems to be the few things that the world is ahead on but States fall behind. As said for a variety of reasons from money - time to education. I grew up in the 70s when Canada switched to metrics. It was difficult in school learning this new method but we did - slowly. It can be done. Yet there is a massive amount of things that have to change from measurement of car gas etc. to even highway signs. At this point America does not have the avaialble funds nor patience to do that. So - I can only assume it won't be any time soon if any time they'll change. Has nothing to do with intelligence as much as "we have a system now and it ain't broke' mentality. I am not sure where you got that chart from - but American's are not stupid. Just misguided for some and personally there is more to worry about in the world than reading a ruler

They tried to force the metric system on us and it failed.... We had no interest in it.

the U.S. is in a hybrid state between the 2 measuring systems
liquor is all metric any more, we buy 750s not fifths, liters not quarts, 500mls not pints and 1.5L not half gallons. all the cars i have had since 2000 have had both mph and kph on the speedometers most digital thermometers allow either fahrenheit or celsius and the most common socket to lose out of your socket set is the 10mm as far as U.S. falling behind? who is to say which is the better system. Americans master both systems any more so who exactly is behind who? besides all you asshats drive on the left hand side of the road and that just ain 't right, so what do you know? dammit. .

regarding the driving on the left thing, I remember I read something interesting (well, to me at least) about that a while back it's cuz the majority of peeps are right-handed in NA where peeps travelled longer distances (cuz bigger countries) the most common form of transport was a wagon. and peeps needed their right hand free to carry their whip (awful practice, 'let's beat the animals acting as our personal taxis'), whereas in smaller nations where peeps tended to ride horses, you needed your right hand free for your sword in case you came across a mercenary knight and needed to duel it out or something so basically, on the right, easier to keep the wagon from veering into the road. on the left, easier to carry a weapon to protect against those passing by in the opposite direction just thought that was interesting. maybe I'm just used to the left by now cuz that's how much of the Caribbean does it due to being former Brit colonies, but there is actually a bit of logic to it. if the majority of peeps were left-handed it would prob all be the reverse

but socket wrenches themselves, in the US, are hybrid. we use a 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4" driver but then we put a metric socket onto the thing, go figure. how about pot. we buy it by the ounce but measure it out by the gram. All chemistry is done metric, it is all milliliters and milligrams and liters and grams and so forth. metric is all around us in the U.S. and fully integrated into the "system" and most Americans bounce between the 2 different measurement systems without batting an eye, many don't even realize it and driving on the left is just wrong, no matter why it is. i mean if god had meant for us to drive on the left he would have put the steering wheels on the right hand side of the car, but he didn't, he put the steering wheel on the left where it belongs. so driving on the left is actually sacrilegious and y'all are going straight to hell . dammit .

you can tell I don't drive? that's prob why half my friends are always taxi-men cuz they're baffled why a paleface is walking on a dirt road lol (it's fun, I feel I get more out of life by not being encased in a vehicle. plus that whole 'sitting' aspect) so can't go anywhere into town without some dude with a red plate (taxi license) stopping to ask if I'm lost or need help ![]() nah, I'm just going into town for carrots and mangoes and cat food, I'm alright. I've seriously made so many friends that way, across multiple nations. that doesn't happen if in a car Quote:
