if anything can be said to be good about Hurricane Katrina it's that it changed policy in the US on evacuation/rescues during natural disasters

a lot of peeps died during Katrina cuz they wouldn't leave their pets behind. I'd have been one of those, no fucking way I'd leave my 2 babies behind even if we were stranded on a rooftop

now rescues in those situations do take pets too. mammal, reptile, amphibian, whatever. they're called companions for a reason and they are family

sucks it took a massive disaster to recognize that but at least it happened

for the rescuers, shelters, foster peeps, etc, they are angels taking care of angels

I've been a cat foster mom before. this was eons ago, got two together cuz they were pair bonded. I ended up adopting them cuz it takes me about 5 minutes to fall in love with a cat. I'm selfish and def not an angel

what I love about good shelters is that they realize animals need more than just food and water. love, playtime, socialization. not only does that make them more adoptable but also a serious quality of life thing

all the props to everyone who does that work but they can't do it without financial support

did DVTimes post an actually useful thread? lol heavens be

Same here. We have an evacuation plan (to get out of the house, and get out of the neighbourhood) should the worst happen, and the first things on our list is "Grab the babies". We have their cages ready complete with emergency food and water for them. Kitties rule.

We have an evacuation plan too, including go bags. In the master bedroom closet we have huge bags where can quickly empty out all of our clothes and go. We have go bags in the garage with chargers for a few other things. We all use the same cell phones and laptops so that's easy. Grab the locked box with our papers and the dog's food on the way out and we could be gone in under five minutes.

We also have a plan to meet up at specific locations in the event we are separated and cell phone service is down.

This can happen anywhere at any time. Ten years ago we had a propane train fire and most of the town had to evacuate (not us), and a few years ago we had a damn north of us that they thought was going to fail so they evacuated a lot of people up to our town (but again not us).

with resources, absolutely a plan is essential. thing is though, not everyone has the luxury of cars and somewhere to go. then what?

I found an article about the change of legislation in the US post Katrina. in a divided political system the state and then the federal bill got overwhelming support from all 'sides'

"Perhaps most significantly, pets must now be evacuated with people"

this is a big issue with domestic violence shelters as well. a lot of abused peeps don't leave cuz they're afraid their partner will harm the family pet(s) if they do. thankfully many shelters in NA now accept pets, and one here in JA does as well. it should be a cross the board rule everywhere for anyone seeking help, be it from fists or natural disasters
